*Who Is Truly Bankrupt? A Powerful Lesson From the Prophet ﷺ 📉*

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ

أَتَدْرُونَ مَا الْمُفْلِسُ؟» قَالُوا: الْمُفْلِسُ فِينَا مَنْ لَا دِرْهَمَ لَهُ وَلَا مَتَاعَ، فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ الْمُفْلِسَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِصَلَاةٍ وَصِيَامٍ وَزَكَاةٍ، وَيَأْتِي قَدْ شَتَمَ هَذَا، وَقَذَفَ هَذَا، وَأَكَلَ مَالَ هَذَا، وَسَفَكَ دَمَ هَذَا، وَضَرَبَ هَذَا، فَيُعْطَى هَذَا مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ، وَهَذَا مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ، فَإِنْ فَنِيَتْ حَسَنَاتُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقْضَى مَا عَلَيْهِ أُخِذَ مِنْ خَطَايَاهُمْ فَطُرِحَتْ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ طُرِحَ فِي النَّارِ

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), 

“*Do you know who the bankrupt person is?”* The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) replied, “The bankrupt person among us, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), is the one who neither possesses dirhams (coins) nor goods.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said,

“*Indeed, the person who is truly bankrupt from my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Qiyaamah with his salaah, fasting and zakaah, but (at the same time,) he will come having verbally abused this person, having falsely accused that person, having (unjustly) consumed the wealth of this person, having (unrightfully) shed the blood of that person and having (wrongfully) struck this person. Hence, this person (who was oppressed) will be given from his good deeds (as recompense), and that person will be given from his good deeds (and in this way, all those who were oppressed will be given from his good deeds). 

If his good deeds are completely depleted before the sins that are upon him have been recompensed, then some of their sins (the sins of the oppressed people) will be taken and placed on him, after which he will be flung into the fire of Jahannum. * ” 

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2581)

Imagine a person who spent his entire life building the house of his dreams, acquiring the car of his dreams, developing the business of his dreams, and amassing a fortune in wealth. However, tragedy struck overnight and his house, car, business and all his wealth burned to ash – leaving him totally bankrupt. Naturally, the person himself will be utterly distraught, and those around him will also feel overwhelming sympathy for his plight – especially as he was previously enjoying wealth, but now lost it all.

However, the scene described by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in this hadeeth is infinitely more tragic. The reason is that even if one loses everything in this world, there is still a chance that he can earn it again. So long as there is life in him, he has an opportunity to improve his condition. 

But once one has passed away, this opportunity no longer exists. On the Day of Qiyaamah, if all our good deeds, which we had hoped will tip the scales in our favour and become the means of our salvation, are taken and given to others, then there is absolutely no way through which we can earn those deeds again. Imagine the dismay of a person on seeing the hard-earned rewards of his salaah, fasting, charity, etc. all being given to others, before his very eyes, due to him oppressing them!

Hence, if we have wronged or hurt any person in any way, then we must secure forgiveness before we pass away. If we fail to do so, then these oppressed individuals will present their complaints on the Day of Qiyaamah, and to compensate them for the hurt they suffered, they will be given our good deeds. Furthermore, if our good deeds are depleted, their sins will be taken and loaded onto our backs.

Lesson:

True bankruptcy is not the loss of wealth in this world; it is losing one’s good deeds in the Hereafter because of ظلم (wrongdoing) toward others.

In essence, making amends in our lifetime is easier than being made to compensate for it after our death.

May Allah Ta‘ala enable us to fulfil the rights of the creation and save us from His punishment – aameen.

FROM DUST TO LIFE AGAIN : The Qur’ān’s Evidence for Resurrection

 

Resurrection in the Qur’ān: A Journey from Death to Eternal Life

 

The Qur'an has encouraged man in many verses to ponder over the nature of their creation. He who created them out of nothing is indeed able to bring them back to life once again. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says:

 وَيَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ أَإِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا (66) أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ الْإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْئًا (67)

(And (the disbelieving) man says: ‘When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive? * Does not man remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?) 

[19:66-67]

Allah encourages man to ponder over how He produces fresh vegetation from land which was once dead. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنَّكَ تَرَى الْأَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً فَإِذَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِي أَحْيَاهَا لَمُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ (39)

(And among His Signs (in this), is that you see the earth barren; but when We send down water [rain] to it, it is stirred to life and growth (of vegetation). Verily He Who

gives it life, surely, (He) is Able to give life to the dead (on the Day of Resurrection). Indeed, He is Able to do all things.) 

[41:39]

Allah encourages man to ponder over they wake up from their sleep, which is similar to life after death. This is the reason why it is called the ‘lesser’ form of death. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says:

 

 اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا ۖ فَيُمْسِكُ الَّتِي قَضَىٰ عَلَيْهَا الْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ الْأُخْرَىٰ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (42) 

(It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.) 

[39:42]

Al-‘Aas bin Waa`il came to the Messenger of Allah (r) with a crumbling bone, and crushed it, and then said:

‘O Muhammad! Will Allah raise this after it has become dust?” He replied, “Indeed Allah will raise this! He will cause you to die, then He will bring you back to life and then He will put you in the Hellfire.”

He (the narrator) said, “Then the following verses were revealed:

 أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الْإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌ مُّبِينٌ (77) وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلًا وَنَسِيَ خَلْقَهُ ۖ قَالَ مَن يُحْيِي الْعِظَامَ وَهِيَ رَمِيمٌ (78) قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا الَّذِي أَنشَأَهَا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ خَلْقٍ عَلِيمٌ (79) الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الشَّجَرِ الْأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنتُم مِّنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ (80) أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم ۚ بَلَىٰ وَهُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ (81) إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ (82) فَسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ (83)

(Does not man see that We have created him from Nutfah [mixed male and female discharge semen drops]. Yet behold! He (stands forth) as an open opponent. 

* And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: ‘Who will give life to these bones when they have rotted away and became dust?’ * Say: (Muhammad (ﷺ)) ‘He will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation! 

* He Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold! You kindle therewith. * Is not He, Who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the like of them? Yes, indeed! He is the All-Knowing Supreme Creator. 

* Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is! * So Glorified is He and Exalted above all that they associate with Him, and in Whose Hands is the dominion of all things, and to Him you shall be returned.)

From Dunyā to Ākhirah: The Signs of a Blessed Transition

 

A Believer’s Beautiful Exit: Lessons from the Sunnah on a Good Ending

1 –“A person whose last words are Laa ilaaha illAllaah [there is no God but Allaah]

The Prophet (SAWS) said,

عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

«مَنْ كَانَ آخِرُ كَلَامِهِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

رواه أبو داود (2673)، وصححه الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله في صحيح أبي داود

“A person whose last words are Laa ilaaha illAllaah [there is no God but Allaah] will enter Paradise.”

2 – Dying with sweat on the forehead:

عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْبِ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ

«مَوْتُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بِعَرَقِ الْجَبِينِ»

رواه أحمد (22513)، والترمذي (980)، والنسائي (1828)، وصححه الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله في صحيح الترمذي

Al-Buraydah ibn al-Husayb (R A) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (SAWS) say, “The believer dies with sweat on his forehead.” 

Narrated by Ahmad, 22513; al-Tirmidhi, 980; al-Nasaa’i, 1828. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

3 – Dying on the night or day of Friday:

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَمُوتُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوْ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَّا وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ

رواه أحمد (6546)، والترمذي (1074)

وقال الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله

«الحديث بمجموع طرقه حسن أو صحيح» 

(باعتبار مجموع أسانيده وطرقه)

The Messenger of Allaah (SAWS) said: “there is no Muslim who dies on the day of Friday or the night of Friday, but Allaah will protect him from the trial (fitnah) of the grave.”

Narrated by Ahmad, 6546; al-Tirmidhi, 1074. 

Al-Albaani said: When all its isnaads are taken into consideration, this hadeeth is hasan or saheeh.

4 – Dying as a fighter for the sake of Allaah:

وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ (169)

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 

“Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allaah. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision. They rejoice in what Allaah has bestowed upon them of His Bounty and rejoice for the sake of those who have not yet joined them, but are left behind (not yet martyred) that on them no fear shall come, nor shall they grieve. They rejoice in a grace and a bounty from Allaah, and that Allaah will not waste the reward of the believers”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:169]

And the Prophet (SAWS) said:

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

«مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ»

رواه مسلم في صحيحه (1915)

“Whoever is killed for the sake of Allaah is a martyr, and whoever dies for the sake of Allaah is a martyr.”

Narrated by Muslim, 1915.

5 – Dying of the plague, a stomach disease, being crushed by a falling wall or by drowning, .Death caused by burning, pleurisy and tuberculosis: 

The Prophet (SAWS) said:

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ

الشُّهَدَاءُ خَمْسَةٌ: الْمَطْعُونُ، وَالْمَبْطُونُ، وَالْغَرِيقُ، وَصَاحِبُ الْهَدْمِ، وَالشَّهِيدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

رواه البخاري (2829)، ومسلم (1915، 1916)

وقال أبو العَوَّامِ خَازِنُ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ «وَالْحَرِيقُ، وَصَاحِبُ السُّلِّ»

وقال الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

📖 صحيح الترغيب والترهيب (1396)

“The martyrs are five: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies from a stomach illness, the one who drowns, the one who dies beneath a collapsed structure, and the one who is martyred in the cause of Allah.”

Additional narrations mention: the one who dies by burning and the one afflicted with tuberculosis.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2829; Muslim, 1915,1916

(Abu’l-Awaam, the custodian of Bayt al-Maqdis added: and burning and tuberculosis). 

Al-Albaani said: Hasan saheeh. Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1396.

6– If a woman dies as a result of childbirth, or when she is pregnant. 

Narrated by Abu Dawood (3111)

The Prophet (SAWS) said,

عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

«وَالْمَرْأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجُمْعٍ شَهِيدَةٌ»

📖 رواه أبو داود (3111)، والنسائي (1846)، وأحمد (22575)

“The woman who dies with a child (during pregnancy or childbirth) is a martyr.”

عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

وَذَكَرَ مِنَ الشُّهَدَاءِ: وَالْمَرْأَةُ يَقْتُلُهَا وَلَدُهَا جَمْعًا، يَجُرُّهَا بِسُرَرِهِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ

رواه أحمد، وصححه الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله في كتاب الجنائز، صـ 📖39

‘Ubaadah ibn al-Saamit said: The Messenger of Allaah (SAWS) told us about the martyrs and mentioned among them, “A woman who is killed by the child in her womb attains martyrdom, and her child will drag her by his umbilical cord to Paradise.”

Narrated by Imaam Ahmad ,

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Kitaab al-Janaa’iz, p. 39.

7 – Dying to defend one’s religion, one’s wealth or one’s life.

The Prophet (SAWS) said:

عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ

مَنْ قُتِلَ دُونَ مَالِهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ قُتِلَ دُونَ دِينِهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ قُتِلَ دُونَ دَمِهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ قُتِلَ دُونَ أَهْلِهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ

رواه الترمذي (1421)، وأبو داود (4772)، والنسائي (4095)

وقال الإمام الترمذي رحمه الله ههَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيح

“Whoever is killed defending his wealth is a martyr; whoever is killed defending his religion is a martyr; whoever is killed in self-defence is a martyr.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1421.

8– Dying guarding the borders of Islam for the sake of Allaah.

Narrated that Salmaan al-Faarsi (R A) said:

عَنْ سَلْمَانَ الْفَارِسِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ

رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صِيَامِ شَهْرٍ وَقِيَامِهِ، وَإِنْ مَاتَ جَرَى عَلَيْهِ عَمَلُهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَعْمَلُهُ، وَأُجْرِيَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ، وَأَمِنَ الْفَتَّانَ

رواه مسلم (1913)

The Messenger of Allaah (SAWS) said: 

“Guarding the borders of Islam for one day and one night is better than fasting and praying at night for a whole month, and if he dies (whist performing this duty), he will go on receiving the reward for this great deed and his provision (continually), and he will be spared the questioning in the grave. ”

9– One of the signs of a good end is dying whilst doing a righteous deed.

عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

مَنْ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ، خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

رواه أحمد (23324)، وصححه الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله في السلسلة الصحيحة (1114)

“The one who says Lā ilāha illAllāh seeking the Face of Allah, it will be the seal of his life and he will enter Paradise; the one who fasts a day seeking the Face of Allah, it will be the seal of his life and he will enter Paradise; and the one who gives charity seeking the Face of Allah, it will be the seal of his life and he will enter Paradise.”

“When We Stand Before Allah: Are We Truly Prepared?”

 أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُولَٰئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ (4)

"Do they not think that they will be resurrected"

Al-Mutaffifin : 83.4

*أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُولٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ*

*Do they not think that they will be resurrected*

Al-Mutaffifin : 83.5

*لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ*

*For a tremendous Day -*

Al-Mutaffifin : 83.6

*يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعٰلَمِينَ*

*The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?*

_They behave as if they will not have to account for what they gain in this life......_

▪ Do these people not fear the resurrection and standing before He Who knows the hidden matters and the innermost secrets, on a Day that contains great horror and tremendous fright?

Their attitude is singularly strange.

▪ The mere idea of being raised to life again on that great Day, when all mankind shall stand as ordinary individuals in front of the Lord of the universe, awaiting His just judgment, without support from any quarter, should be enough to make them change course.

▪ But they persist, as if the thought of being raised to life after death has never crossed their minds.

1. **الآخرة (The Hereafter)**

 

 

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏

 "‏ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلاَ يُؤْذِ جَارَهُ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ ‏"‏‏.‏

 

 

Narrated Abu Huraira:

 

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest generously and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should speak what is good or keep silent."

 2. **يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ  (Day of ˹Final˺ Decision )**

 

 

** إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًۭا ۝ **

 

 

Indeed, the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision is an appointed time—

** ٱلْحَآقَّةُ ۝ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ ۝ وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ **

 

 

*"The Inevitable Reality— What is the Inevitable Reality? And what can make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?"*

** يَرْفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ **

 

 

*"Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees."*

 6. **السَّاعَةُ (The Hour)**
