🔷 〔 01 〕 DISCOVERING RIYĀḌ AL-ṢĀLIḤĪN

Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn (رِيَاضُ الصَّالِحِينَ), meaning “The Gardens of the Righteous,” is one of the most widely studied collections of Prophetic Ḥadīths.

Its author was the distinguished scholar Imām Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī رحمه الله (631–676 AH), renowned for his contributions to Ḥadīth, Islamic jurisprudence and scholarly instruction.

The book brings together Qur’ānic verses and Prophetic narrations concerning faith, worship, sincerity, repentance, patience, manners and righteous conduct. Its chapters guide readers towards a deeper understanding of the teachings of Islam.

The value of this collection lies not merely in the narrations it preserves, but also in how its subjects encourage Muslims to examine their intentions, improve their character and strengthen their relationship with Allah.

For this reason, Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn remains an important resource for students of knowledge, teachers, study circles and anyone seeking to learn and practise the guidance of the Qur’ān and Sunnah.

THE PURPOSE OF STUDY

🌿 ❖ Read with Understanding ❖ 🌿

💠 ❖ Reflect with Insight ❖ 💠

🔷 ❖ Practise with Sincerity ❖ 🔷

🟢 ❖ Share Beneficial Knowledge ❖ 🟢

╰────────── 💠 ──────────╯

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟢 〔 02 〕 EXPLORING THE SUBJECTS OF THE BOOK

The chapters of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn address the inner condition of the believer as well as the outward actions through which faith is demonstrated.

🟢 ❖ الإِخْلَاصُ — SINCERITY

Purifying one’s intention so that acts of worship and righteous deeds are performed for the sake of Allah.

🔵 ❖ التَّوْبَةُ — REPENTANCE

Returning to Allah with regret for one’s sins, abandoning disobedience and seeking His forgiveness.

🟠 ❖ الصَّبْرُ — PATIENCE

Remaining steadfast in obedience, resisting sin and responding to trials with perseverance.

🟣 ❖ التَّقْوَى — TAQWĀ

Being mindful of Allah, fulfilling His commands and avoiding what He has prohibited.

RELIANCE UPON ALLAH

Placing one’s trust in Allah while taking appropriate and lawful means.

REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH

Remembering Allah through prescribed adhkār, supplications and other acts of worship.

🟠 ❖ الدُّعَاءُ — SUPPLICATION

Calling upon Allah, seeking His assistance and asking for His mercy and guidance.

KINDNESS TO PARENTS

Fulfilling the rights of one’s parents through respect, kindness and considerate conduct.

MAINTAINING FAMILY TIES

Preserving family relationships and treating relatives with kindness.

These subjects demonstrate the comprehensive nature of Prophetic guidance. Islam addresses the heart, worship, personal discipline and the rights of others.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟣 〔 03 〕 UNDERSTANDING THE AUTHOR’S ARRANGEMENT

Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله arranged the book into chapters dealing with particular subjects. The chapters commonly begin with relevant Qur’ānic verses, followed by Prophetic narrations connected to the subject.

📖 〔 EXAMPLE ONE 〕

THE CHAPTER OF SINCERITY

This chapter establishes the importance of sincere intentions and presents evidence concerning the relationship between intention and righteous deeds.

📗 〔 EXAMPLE TWO 〕

THE CHAPTER OF REPENTANCE

This chapter directs attention towards repentance, seeking forgiveness and returning to obedience to Allah.

The thematic arrangement allows students to study individual subjects systematically. A teacher can explain one chapter at a time, while students can revise the evidence, examine its meaning and consider its practical implications.

🔍 〔 A POINT FOR STUDENTS 〕

Do not overlook the chapter headings. They help you identify the subject under discussion and understand the relationship between the evidence gathered by the author.

For more advanced students, examining the relationship between a chapter heading and its supporting evidence can develop a deeper appreciation of the author’s scholarly method.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟠 〔 04 〕 AUTHENTICITY AND SOUND UNDERSTANDING

Studying a Ḥadīth collection requires attention to both the reliability of its narrations and the correct understanding of their meanings.

Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn contains many authentic narrations, including numerous reports recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Nevertheless, students should not assume that every narration in the book necessarily has the same grading.

When the authenticity of a particular report requires clarification, consult recognised scholarly gradings and reliable explanations.

🔵 〔 FIRST PRINCIPLE 〕 AUTHENTICATION

Is the narration reliably established from the Prophet ﷺ according to the principles of Ḥadīth scholarship?

🟢 〔 SECOND PRINCIPLE 〕 UNDERSTANDING

What does the narration mean, and how should its guidance be understood in light of the relevant evidence and scholarly principles?

Both questions are important. A translation alone does not necessarily provide a complete understanding of a narration, and a beneficial message should not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ without proper verification.

Students should recognise the limits of their knowledge and refer difficult questions to qualified scholars.

╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮

💠 A PRINCIPLE OF RESPONSIBLE LEARNING

Preserve the wording accurately.

Verify the attribution.

Understand the evidence.

Avoid speaking about the religion without knowledge.

╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🔵 〔 05 〕 FROM KNOWLEDGE TO DAILY ACTION

The true benefit of studying Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn becomes apparent when its teachings begin to shape our lives.

When studying patience, consider how you respond to hardship. When studying sincerity, examine whether your intentions are directed towards pleasing Allah. When studying good character, reflect upon the way you speak to your family, teachers, classmates and fellow Muslims.

Knowledge should lead to reflection, and reflection should encourage action.

🌿 〔 PAUSE • REFLECT • APPLY 〕

🔹 What is the principal lesson of this chapter?

🔹 Which Qur’ānic verse or Prophetic narration establishes this teaching?

🔹 What does the evidence reveal about my relationship with Allah?

🔹 Which habit or behaviour should I improve?

🔹 How can I apply this guidance today?

🔹 How can I share this benefit accurately and sincerely?

Do not judge the success of your studies solely by the number of pages you complete. Consider whether your understanding has improved, your worship has strengthened and your conduct has become better.

A small lesson applied consistently can have a lasting effect on your life.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟤 〔 06 〕 RIYĀḌ AL-ṢĀLIḤĪN AND OTHER ḤADĪTH COLLECTIONS

Students encounter different types of Ḥadīth works throughout their studies. Recognising their general purposes helps them appreciate the contribution of each collection.

📚 〔 صِحَاحٌ 〕 ṢIḤĀḤ COLLECTIONS

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim are celebrated collections of authentic Ḥadīths compiled according to the respective authors’ criteria.

SUNAN COLLECTIONS

These are generally arranged according to chapters dealing with Islamic rulings and practical matters, such as purification, prayer, fasting and transactions.

MUSNAD COLLECTIONS

These works are generally organised according to the Companion who transmitted the narration.

MUṢANNAF COLLECTIONS

These are generally arranged by subject and may contain Prophetic narrations alongside reports from Companions and early generations.

RIYĀḌ AL-ṢĀLIḤĪN

A thematic collection focusing on Qur’ānic guidance and Prophetic teachings related to faith, worship, personal development and righteous conduct.

These categories describe general arrangements rather than absolute rules. Individual works may differ in their methods and purposes.

💠 THE MAIN LESSON

Understanding the purpose of a book helps students approach its contents with the correct expectations.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟢 〔 07 〕 A STUDENT’S PLAN FOR CONSISTENT STUDY

A clear routine helps transform reading into meaningful learning.

🔹 01 — READ WITH PURPOSE

Begin with the chapter heading. Identify its central theme before examining the evidence.

🔵 02 — EXAMINE THE TEXT

Read the Qur’ānic verses and Ḥadīths carefully. Pay attention to the Arabic wording, translation and references.

🟢 03 — CONSULT RELIABLE EXPLANATIONS

Clarify unfamiliar expressions and study the explanations of qualified scholars rather than relying solely on personal interpretation.

🟣 04 — RECORD THE BENEFITS

Write down important lessons, relevant evidence and questions that require further study.

🟠 05 — APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN

Choose a practical lesson and make a sincere effort to implement it in your daily life.

💠 06 — REVIEW AND SHARE

Revise previous chapters and share beneficial knowledge with accuracy, humility and sincerity.

A consistent routine, even when the amount studied is modest, can help develop a strong foundation in Prophetic knowledge.

Learning about sincerity should encourage us to purify our intentions. Learning about patience should strengthen our perseverance. Learning about good character should motivate us to treat others with kindness, fairness and respect.

The student of knowledge should seek more than information. The aim is beneficial understanding, sincere worship and conduct that reflects the guidance of the Qur’ān and Sunnah.

May Allah grant us knowledge that benefits us, hearts that remain sincere, deeds that He accepts and steadfastness upon His guidance.

O Allah, benefit us through what You have taught us, teach us what will benefit us, and increase us in knowledge.

🌿SABR PATIENCE : From Hardship to Hope 🤲✨

💫 From Hardship to Hope: The Power of Sabr in Islam 🕌

Patience, or Sabr (الصبر), is one of the great qualities of a believer.

Sabr does not mean that a person never feels sadness, anger or difficulty.

Rather, it means remaining obedient to Allah, controlling oneself and continuing to do what is right despite hardship.

Allah says:

“O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.”

— Qur'an 2:153

1. Allah commands us to be patient

Patience is not merely a recommendation. Allah repeatedly commands believers to remain patient and steadfast.

When difficulties come, turn toward Allah rather than away from Him.

2. Patience brings an enormous reward

Allah says:

“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without limit.”

— Qur'an 39:10

What a beautiful promise.

A person may not see the reward of patience immediately, but Allah does not allow sincere patience to be wasted.

3. Life will contain tests

Allah says:

“We will certainly test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives and fruits. And give good news to those who patiently endure.”

— Qur'an 2:155

Hardship is part of life.

The question is not whether we will face difficulties, but how we respond when they arrive.

4. Prophet Ayyub عليه السلام was an example of patience

Prophet Ayyub عليه السلام is remembered for his steadfastness during severe trials.

His story teaches us that hardship does not mean Allah has abandoned a believer.

A person can suffer greatly while remaining close to Allah.

5. Patience helps control anger

Real strength is not simply physical strength.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The strong person is not the one who overcomes others by his strength. The strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 6114

Patience gives us the ability to pause before speaking, think before reacting and forgive when appropriate.

6. Patience helps us remain consistent in worship

Prayer, fasting, Qur'an, charity and other acts of worship require consistency.

Sometimes we feel motivated; sometimes we do not.

Sabr helps us continue doing what is right even when our feelings change.

7. Patience protects us from sin

Temptation requires patience.

When you have the opportunity to do something haram but choose to walk away for Allah's sake, that is patience.

When anger tells you to say something hurtful but you remain silent, that is patience.

When hardship makes you want to give up but you continue trusting Allah, that is patience.

8. Patience strengthens trust in Allah

Allah says:

“Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them.”

— Qur'an 65:2

Sometimes we cannot see the solution.

But Allah can.

Our responsibility is to remain obedient while trusting His wisdom.

9. Hardship does not last forever

Allah gives us a powerful reminder:

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ۝ إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

“So, surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with hardship comes ease.”

— Qur'an 94:5–6

When life becomes difficult, remember:

This moment will pass.

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep going.

10. Patience develops good character

A patient person learns self-control, humility, forgiveness and perseverance.

These qualities improve our relationship with Allah and our relationship with other people.

11. Patience can lead to forgiveness

A person who learns to control anger is more capable of forgiving others.

Forgiveness does not mean approving wrongdoing. It means refusing to allow anger and resentment to control your heart.

12. Patience and gratitude belong together

A believer learns patience during difficulty and gratitude during ease.

Allah says:

“If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more.”

— Qur'an 14:7

When things are difficult, be patient.

When things are good, be grateful.

In both situations, remain connected to Allah.

13. Patience gives us a long-term perspective

Not every problem needs an immediate answer.

Sometimes we need to wait.

Sometimes we need to learn.

Sometimes we need to allow time for circumstances to change.

Sabr teaches us not to make permanent decisions because of temporary emotions.

14. Patience is a gift from Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever strives to be patient, Allah will grant him patience, and no one is given a gift better and more comprehensive than patience.”

📚 Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1469; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1053.

It is Muttafaqun ‘alayh (متفق عليه).

This is an important lesson: patience can be developed.

Ask Allah for it, practice it and continue striving.

15. Patience strengthens the Muslim community

When Muslims are patient with one another, they become more capable of supporting each other through difficult times.

A strong community is not one where nobody has problems.

It is one where people help each other through those problems.

16. Patience helps us learn

Learning anything worthwhile requires time.

Whether it is Qur'an, Arabic, education, a profession or a new skill, progress rarely happens overnight.

Be patient with yourself.

Keep learning.

Keep improving.

17. Patience protects us from despair

When difficulties become overwhelming, remember Allah's promise:

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

“Surely with hardship comes ease.”

— Qur'an 94:5

Never allow a difficult chapter to convince you that the entire story is finished.

18. Patience brings us closer to Allah

Allah says:

“And Allah loves those who persevere.”

— Qur'an 3:146

What greater motivation do we need?

To be patient is not merely to endure difficulty.

It is an opportunity to become among those whom Allah loves.

19. Patience leads to ultimate success

The believer understands that this life is temporary.

Our goal is not simply to have an easy life.

Our goal is to live in obedience to Allah and meet Him with faith.

Patience helps us remain steadfast on that journey.

20. Be patient—and be useful to others

A beautiful principle found in Islamic teachings is that a believer should seek to benefit others.

The statement:

“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to people.”

Al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ of Al-Ṭabarānī, Hadith 5787.

This gives us an important lesson:

Do not live only for yourself.

Use your knowledge to help others.

Use your time to help others.

Use your wealth to help others.

Use your patience to support someone who is struggling.

Use your words to encourage rather than discourage.
