🌿 A STUDENT’S MAP OF ḤADĪTH COMMENTARIES —

📚 **FAMOUS COMMENTARIES OF THE MAJOR ḤADĪTH BOOKS**

 **A Simple Student’s Guide to Sharḥ, Kutub al-Sittah, Mishkāt & Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn**

*“The Ḥadīth gives the text; the Sharḥ helps the student understand it.”*

╚══════════════════════════════════════╝

✦ INTRODUCTION — WHAT IS A SHARḤ ?

When students begin studying the major books of Ḥadīth, they will often see another Arabic word:

شَرْح  - Sharḥ

It means:

Explanation • Commentary • Clarification

A **Sharḥ** is a work written to explain a Ḥadīth collection.

The commentator may explain:

📖 difficult words

🔗 chains of transmission

👤 narrators

⚖️ Fiqh rulings

📚 different

 scholarly opinions

📝 differences in wording

🔍 apparent contradictions

🌿 lessons and benefits

Therefore, when a student sees:

فَتْحُ الْبَارِي شَرْحُ صَحِيحِ الْبُخَارِي

the words **Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī** mean:

**“A commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.”**

This gives us an important study principle:

 MATN → SHARḤ → UNDERSTANDING

 Text → Explanation → Understanding

---

 ① ṢAḤĪḤ AL-BUKHĀRĪ  صَحِيحُ الْبُخَارِي

Imām Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī رحمه الله

One of the most famous commentaries is:

📚 فَتْحُ الْبَارِي — Fatḥ al-Bārī

🔹 Author: Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī رحمه الله

It is one of the most famous and extensive commentaries on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.

Another famous commentary is:

📚 عُمْدَةُ الْقَارِي — ʿUmdat al-Qārī

🔹 Author: Badr al-Dīn al-ʿAynī رحمه الله

 🌿 **Student lesson**

When studying Bukhārī, remember:

**Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī** = the original Ḥadīth collection.

**Fatḥ al-Bārī** = detailed explanation of that collection.

**ʿUmdat al-Qārī** = another major explanation.

🔹 Author: Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ رحمه الله

 🌿 **Student lesson**

When you see:

you are looking at the **explanation of Imām Muslim's collection**, not another independent collection of Ḥadīth.

An earlier important commentary is:

📚 مَعَالِمُ السُّنَن — Maʿālim al-Sunan

🔹 Author: Imām al-Khaṭṭābī رحمه الله

 🌿 **Student lesson**

Abū Dāwūd is especially important for students studying:

Ḥadīth + Aḥkām + Fiqh

because many of its chapters concern practical rulings.

---

 ④ JĀMIʿ AL-TIRMIDHĪ -جَامِعُ التِّرْمِذِي

🟣 عَارِضَةُ الْأَحْوَذِي — ʿĀriḍat al-Aḥwadhī

🔷 Author: Abū Bakr Ibn al-ʿArabī رحمه الله

🔵 ❖ ḤASAN ❖🟢 ❖ ṢAḤĪḤ ❖🟣 ❖ GHARĪB

 ❖🔷 ❖ CHAINS ❖🟠 ❖ NARRATORS ❖🌿

❖ FIQH ❖

and the positions of scholars.

Therefore, his work is particularly useful for students learning how **Ḥadīth and Fiqh interact**.

Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn is excellent for thematic study.

Its commentary helps the student understand:

the words → the context → the lessons →

the Fiqh → the practical application.

---

⑨ 🌿 ❖ WHAT DOES A COMMENTATOR ACTUALLY DO? ❖

Imagine that the Ḥadīth says:

إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ

“Actions are only by intentions.”

A student may understand the basic translation.

But the commentator may ask:

🔹 What does Niyyah mean?

🔵 Where is the place of intention?

🟣 What does the rest of the Ḥadīth mean?

🟢 What are its Fiqh implications?

🟠 What did the Ṣaḥābah understand?

💠 What did earlier scholars say?

🌿 Are there other narrations that explain it?

🔷 What linguistic points are important?

❖ That is the role of Sharḥ — explaining and clarifying the meanings of the Ḥadīth.

🔵 ⑩ ❖ SHARḤ, ḤĀSHIYAH & TAʿLĪQ ❖

📘 شَرْح — Sharḥ: Explanation or commentary.

🟢 حَاشِيَة — Ḥāshiyah: Annotations or notes on a text or commentary.

🟣 تَعْلِيق — Taʿlīq: Notes, remarks or annotations.

🔷 مُخْتَصَر — Mukhtaṣar: An abridgement or concise version.

🌿 شَرْحٌ مُخْتَصَر — Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar: A concise explanation or commentary.

A concise commentary.

Understanding these words makes navigating Islamic books much easier.

---

🔵 ⑪ ❖ HOW SHOULD A BEGINNER USE A COMMENTARY? ❖

🟢 ① READ THE ḤADĪTH — Understand the translation.

🔵 ② IDENTIFY THE WORDS — Look up unfamiliar terms.

🟣 ③ READ A SIMPLE SHARḤ — Learn the basic meaning.

🟠 ④ STUDY THE FIQH — Understand the rulings and principles.

🔷 ⑤ COMPARE EXPLANATIONS — Consult other commentaries when needed.

🌿 ⑥ REREAD THE ḤADĪTH — Review it with your new understanding.

🔵 ⑫ ❖ THE BIG PICTURE ❖

📖 ḤADĪTH COLLECTION — The original narrations.

🔵 SHARḤ — Explanation and clarification.

⚖️ FIQH — Rulings and legal understanding.

🟣 ḤADĪTH SCIENCE — Chains, narrators, grading and defects.

🌿 UNDERSTANDING — Placing the narration in its proper context.

“Forty Prophetic Supplications and Remembrances from the Sunnah”

Forty Prophetic Supplications with Arabic Text and Hadith References

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

الحمد لله رب العالمين، والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا محمد، وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين.

The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ contains a treasure of supplications, remembrance and words of guidance that nourish the heart, strengthen faith and teach the believer how to turn to Allah in every circumstance.

The following forty narrations have been selected from the authentic and established Hadith literature. They include supplications for forgiveness, distress, protection, guidance, gratitude and the remembrance of Allah.

Important note: Although these are sometimes circulated under the title “Forty Hadith Qudsi,” this is not technically accurate. The first narration is a Hadith Qudsi. The remaining narrations are Prophetic Hadith, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ teaches or reports the supplication and remembrance.

Note: The grading of this particular narration has been discussed by the Hadith scholars. It should therefore not be presented as being at the same level as the narrations of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

39. The Great Virtue of the Remembrance of Allah

Reference: Musnad Ahmad, 22079; al-Tabarani, al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, 20/166, no. 352; Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Musannaf.

Important Hadith note: The marfuʿ chain has been discussed by the Hadith scholars and contains an issue of interruption. The report should therefore be presented with this qualification rather than simply labelled

“Sahih.” The virtue of abundant Dhikr itself is established by numerous authentic narrations.

40. The Expiation of the Gathering

“Whoever sits in a gathering in which there is much idle talk and then says before leaving: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I testify that there is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You,’ will be forgiven for what occurred in that gathering.”

Reference: Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi, 3433; al-Nasa'i, al-Sunan al-Kubra, 10230; Musnad Ahmad, 10415. Al-Tirmidhi described it as حسن صحيح غريب.

Conclusion

These forty narrations demonstrate the remarkable comprehensiveness of the Sunnah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught his Ummah how to turn to Allah in happiness and difficulty, in times of health and illness, during anxiety and hardship, after prayer and throughout the ordinary moments of daily life.

The believer is taught to seek:

المغفرة — Forgiveness

العافية — Well-being

الهداية — Guidance

الثبات — Steadfastness

الرحمة — Mercy

الرضا — Contentment

الذكر — Remembrance

حسن العبادة — Excellence in worship

The beauty of these Prophetic supplications is that they do not merely ask Allah for worldly comfort. They ask for the rectification of the heart, the preservation of faith, forgiveness of sins, beneficial life, a good ending and success in the Hereafter.

Allah Most High says:

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

“Your Lord has said: Call upon Me; I will respond to you.”

Surah Ghafir, 40:60

May Allah Most High make us among those whose tongues remain moist with His remembrance, whose hearts turn to Him in every circumstance, and whose final words are words of Tawhid.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الذَّاكِرِينَ لَكَ، الشَّاكِرِينَ لِنِعَمِكَ، الْمُحْسِنِينَ فِي عِبَادَتِكَ، وَاخْتِمْ لَنَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَالطَّاعَةِ

وصلى الله وسلم وبارك على سيدنا محمد، وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين.

والله أعلم.
