ACTIONS THAT LEADS TO JAHANNAM (HELL)

 

Asalaamu 'Alaikum!

 

Examples of Some Actions which take you to Jahannam

 

Those who are weak to avoid evil

 

وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ خَمْسَةٌ الضَّعِيفُ الَّذِي لاَ زَبْرَ لَهُ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِيكُمْ تَبَعًا لاَ يَتْبَعُونَ أَهْلاً وَلاَ مَالاً

رواه مسلم

 

 

“The inmates of Hell are of five types: the weak who lack power to (avoid evil)” [Muslim]

 

Those who conceal knowledge:

 

"‏ مَنْ كَتَمَ عِلْمًا مِمَّا يَنْفَعُ اللَّهُ بِهِ فِي أَمْرِ النَّاسِ فِي الدِّينِ أَلْجَمَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِلِجَامٍ مِنَ النَّارِ ‏"‏ ‏

 

"Anyone who conceals when asked whilst having knowledge, will have a bridle of Fire in his mouth." [Mishkaat]

Those who drink khamr Alcohol:

 

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ وَكُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَمَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَمَاتَ وَهُوَ يُدْمِنُهَا لَمْ يَتُبْ لَمْ يَشْرَبْهَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ» . رَوَاهُ مُسلم

 

Ibn ‘Umar reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Every intoxicant is khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. He who drinks wine in this world and dies when he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not drink it in the next.”

[Muslim] 

Those who eat Haram food:

 

وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ لَحْمٌ نبَتَ منَ السُّحْتِ وكلُّ لحمٍ نبَتَ منَ السُّحْتِ كَانَتِ النَّارُ أَوْلَى بِهِ» . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالدَّارِمِيُّ وَالْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي شُعَبِ الْإِيمَانِ

 

"Flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful will not enter Paradise, but Hell is more fitting for all flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful."

[ Narrated by Imam Ahmad and others ]

Those who advise others but do not practice themselves:

 

أتيتُ ليلَةَ أُسْرِيَ بي علَى رِجالٍ تُقْرَضُ شِفَاهُهُم بمقاريضَ من نارٍ قلْتُ مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ يَا جبريلُ قال هؤلاءِ خطباءُ أمتِكَ الَّذِينَ يَأْمُرُونَ الناسَ بالبرِّ وينسونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وهم يَتْلُونَ الْكِتابَ أفَلَا يعقِلونَ وفي روايةٍ تُقْرَضُ ألسنتُهُمْ بِمقَارِيضَ من نارٍ أوْ قال من حديدٍ وفي روايةٍ أتيتُ على سماءِ الدنيا ليلةَ أُسْرِيَ بي فرأَيْتُ فيها رجالًا تُقْطَعُ ألسنتُهم وشفاهُهم

"On the night of Ascension I saw some people whose lips were going to be cut with the scissors of Fire. I asked: "O Jibraeel ,who are they?" "These are those preachers of your Ummah who called for righteous deeds and forgot about themselves; they read and recited the Book of Allah but did not put it into practice." [Mishkaat]

 

"‏ يُجَاءُ بِالرَّجُلِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَيُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ، فَتَنْدَلِقُ أَقْتَابُهُ فِي النَّارِ، فَيَدُورُ كَمَا يَدُورُ الْحِمَارُ بِرَحَاهُ، فَيَجْتَمِعُ أَهْلُ النَّارِ عَلَيْهِ، فَيَقُولُونَ أَىْ فُلاَنُ، مَا شَأْنُكَ أَلَيْسَ كُنْتَ تَأْمُرُنَا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ قَالَ كُنْتُ آمُرُكُمْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلاَ آتِيهِ، وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَآتِيهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ رَوَاهُ غُنْدَرٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ‏.‏

رواه البخاري

 

"On the Day of Qiyamah, a person will be brought and hurled into Jahannam. His intestines will come out immediately and he will start evolving like the ass with the grinding stone. Having seen this, the men of Jahannam will centre around him and ask: "What happened to you? You asked us to do good and avoid evil?" "Yes, of course! I asked you to do good and avoid evil but did not do so myself."

Those who boast of their deeds:

 

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ جُبِّ الْحَزَنِ» قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا جُبُّ الْحَزَنِ؟ قَالَ: «وَادٍ فِي جَهَنَّمَ تَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْهُ جَهَنَّم كل يَوْم أَرْبَعمِائَة مرّة» . قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَنْ يَدْخُلُهَا قَالَ: «الْقُرَّاءُ الْمُرَاءُونَ بِأَعْمَالِهِمْ» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَكَذَا ابْنُ مَاجَهْ وَزَادَ فِيهِ: «وَإِنَّ مِنْ أَبْغَضِ الْقُرَّاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى الَّذِينَ يَزُورُونَ الْأُمَرَاءَ»  قَالَ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ: يَعْنِي الجورة

رواه ابن الماجة

"Seek refuge with Allah from the well of sorrows." "What is this well of sorrows?" The Companions (ra) asked He explained: "There is a ditch in Jahannam, which is such that Jahannam itself seeks refuge from it 400 times a day." "The devouts who repeatedly boast their virtues deeds will be there.” [Mishkaat]

Those who give a verdict based upon his mind:

 

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ قَالَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ بِرَأْيِهِ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ» . وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «مَنْ قَالَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ فَليَتَبَوَّأ مَقْعَده من النَّار» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيّ

 

“He who introduces an opinion related to the Qur’an based on his ‘Aql he will reserve for himself a place in the Hell-fire” [Tirmizi]

Those who miss their Prayers:

 

{ مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ (42) قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ (43) }

[Surah Al-Muddaththir: 42-43]

 

“What has caused you to enter Hell?’ They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers)”  [Qur’an 74: 42-43]

Those who use Gold and Silver utensils to eat and drink:

 

عن أم سلمة رضي الله عنها أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏"‏الذي يشرب في آنية الفضة إنما يجرجر في بطنه نار جهنم‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

وفي رواية لمسلم‏:‏ ‏"‏أن الذي يأكل أو يشرب في آنية الفضة والذهب‏"‏

 

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whosoever drinks in utensils of silver, in fact, kindles in his belly the fire of Hell."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

 

The narration of Muslim is: "Verily, the person who eats or drinks in utensils made of gold and silver

Those who draw Pictures that have soul:

 

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ نُمْرُقَةً فِيهَا تَصَاوِيرُ، فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِالْبَابِ فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ أَتُوبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِمَّا أَذْنَبْتُ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ مَا هَذِهِ النُّمْرُقَةُ ‏"‏‏.‏ قُلْتُ لِتَجْلِسَ عَلَيْهَا وَتَوَسَّدَهَا‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرِ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، يُقَالُ لَهُمْ أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ‏.‏ وَإِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ لاَ تَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ الصُّورَةُ ‏"‏‏.‏

رواه البخاري

Narrated `Aisha:

I purchased a cushion with pictures on it. The Prophet (came and) stood at the door but did not enter. I said (to him), "I repent to Allah for what (the guilt) I have done." He said, "What is this cushion?" I said, "It is for you to sit on and recline on." He said, "The makers of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to them, 'Make alive what you have created.' Moreover, the angels do not enter a house where there are pictures.'"

[Narrated by Al Bukhari]

Those who commit Suicide:

 

، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ الَّذِي يَخْنُقُ نَفْسَهُ يَخْنُقُهَا فِي النَّارِ، وَالَّذِي يَطْعُنُهَا يَطْعُنُهَا فِي النَّارِ ‏"‏‏.‏

رواه البخاري

 

"He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." [Bukhari]

Those who are arrogant:

 

وعن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ “لا يدخل الجنة من كان في قلبه مثقال ذرة من كبر” فقال رجل” إن الرجل يحب أن يكون ثوبه حسناً ونعله حسناً‏؟‏ قال‏:‏ “إن الله جميل يحب الجمال الكبر بطر الحق وغمط الناس” ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏

 

Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who has, in his heart, an ant's weight of arrogance will not enter Jannah." Someone said: "A man likes to wear beautiful clothes and shoes?" Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah is Beautiful, He loves beauty. Arrogance means ridiculing and rejecting the Truth and despising people."

[Muslim].

Those who break family ties:

 

وَعَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ ‏- رضى الله عنه ‏- قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ ‏- صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏-{ لَا يَدْخُلُ اَلْجَنَّةَ قَاطِعٌ } يَعْنِي: قَاطِعَ رَحِمٍ.‏ مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ 1‏ .‏

 

‏1 ‏- صحيح.‏ رواه البخاري (5984)‏، ومسلم (2556)‏ والتفسير من سفيان بن عيينة، وهو لمسلم دون البخاري.‏

 

"The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise." [Bukhari]

Those of the women who are disobedient to their husbands:

 

وعن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏"‏يا معشر النساء تصدقن، وأكثرن من الاستغفار، فإني رأيتكن أكثر أهل النار‏"‏ قالت امرأة منهن‏:‏ مالنا أكثر أهل النار‏؟‏ قال‏:‏ ‏"‏تكثرن اللعن، وتكفرن العشير مارأيت من ناقصات عقل ودين أغلب لذي لب منكن‏"‏ قالت‏:‏ ما نقصان العقل والدين‏؟‏ قال‏"‏ ‏"‏شهادة امرأتين بشهادة رجل، وتمكث الأيام لا تصلي‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

 

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O women folk! You should give charity and be diligent in seeking Allah's forgiveness because I have seen (i.e., on the Night of the Ascension to the highest heavens) that dwellers of the Hell are women." A woman amongst them said: "Why is it that the majority of the dwellers of Hell are women?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. In spite of your lacking in wisdom and failing in religion, you are depriving the wisest of men of their intelligence." Upon this the woman asked: "What is the deficiency in our wisdom and in our religion?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Your lack of wisdom can be well judged from the fact that the evidence of two women is equal to that one man. You do not offer Salat (prayer) for some days and you do not fast (the whole of) Ramadan sometimes, it is a deficiency in religion."

Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the life to come and keep us safe from the torment of the Fire (2:201) Ameen.
