🌿 ═══════ ❖ THE MUQADDIMAH OF ṢAḤĪḤ MUSLIM ❖ ═══════ 🌿

📖 ṢAḤĪḤ MUSLIM — What Students Can Learn from the Muqaddimah

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🌿 ❖ INTRODUCTION ❖ 🌿

When students open Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, they may go directly to the aḥādīth. However, before the main collection is the Muqaddimah (المُقَدِّمَة), which contains important discussions about the preservation and transmission of Ḥadīth.

Imām Muslim رحمه الله preserved statements from earlier scholars explaining the importance of reliable narrators, connected chains, and careful examination of reports.

Studying the Muqaddimah helps students understand how the scholars protected the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🔵 ❖ ٠١ — WHO WAS IMĀM MUSLIM? ❖

الإِمَامُ مُسْلِمٌ

Imām Muslim رحمه الله was one of the great scholars of Ḥadīth.

His full name was:

Abū al-Ḥusayn Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Qushayrī al-Naysābūrī رحمه الله

His famous collection is:

صَحِيحُ مُسْلِمٍ

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim is one of the most important collections of authentic Prophetic Ḥadīth.

The Muqaddimah introduces students to important principles used by the scholars when examining narrations.

🔷 ❖ ٠٢ — WHAT DOES MUQADDIMAH MEAN?

❖ -مُقَدِّمَة

Muqaddimah means an introduction or preface.

In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, it refers to the introductory material discussing principles connected to the transmission and criticism of Ḥadīth.

It teaches students why religious reports must be examined carefully rather than accepted without verification.

🔵 ❖ ٠٣ — الإِسْنَادُ مِنَ الدِّينِ ❖

Al-Isnād min al-Dīn

“The chain of transmission is part of the religion.”

The scholars did not merely ask what a Ḥadīth said. They also investigated:

◇ Who transmitted it?

◇ From whom did he receive it?

◇ Was the chain connected?

◇ Were the narrators reliable?

The Isnād is one of the foundations of ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth, the sciences of Ḥadīth.

🔷 ❖ ٠٤ — WHAT IS ISNĀD? ❖

الإِسْنَادُ

Al-Isnād is the chain of transmitters through whom a report is conveyed.

A simplified illustration is:

Imām → Teacher → Narrator → Companion → Prophet ﷺ

Each link must be examined according to the relevant principles of Ḥadīth scholarship.

A statement cannot be accepted as authentic merely because its wording sounds good or its meaning appears beneficial.

🟣 ❖ ٠٥ — THIS KNOWLEDGE IS RELIGION ❖

Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رحمه الله said:

إِنَّ هَذَا الْعِلْمَ دِينٌ، فَانْظُرُوا عَمَّنْ تَأْخُذُونَ دِينَكُمْ

“Inna hādhā al-ʿilma dīn, fanẓurū ʿamman taʾkhudhūna dīnakum.”

“Indeed, this knowledge is religion, so look carefully from whom you take your religion.”

📖  Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Muqaddimah.

🌿 A LESSON FOR STUDENTS

Religious knowledge should be taken from reliable sources and qualified people. Good intentions alone do not replace careful verification.

🔵 ❖ ٠٦ — ثِقَة | THIQAH ❖

Thiqah means trustworthy or reliable.

The scholars examined whether a narrator could be relied upon when transmitting Ḥadīth.

They considered not only a person's uprightness but also the accuracy of his transmission.

🔷 ❖ ٠٧ — العَدَالَة | ʿADĀLAH ❖

ʿAdālah refers to a narrator's uprightness and religious integrity.

The scholars considered whether a narrator possessed the qualities required for his reports to be accepted.

🟣 ❖ ٠٨ — الضَّبْط | ḌABṬ ❖

Ḍabṭ means precision and accuracy.

The scholars examined whether a narrator:

◇ Remembered reports accurately.

◇ Preserved his written material correctly.

◇ Avoided significant mistakes in transmission.

A narrator's sincerity and uprightness did not, by themselves, establish that his transmission was accurate.

Both reliability and precision were important.

🔵 ❖ ٠٩ — الجَرْحُ وَالتَّعْدِيلُ ❖

Al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl is the science of evaluating narrators.

الجَرْحُ — AL-JARḤ

Identifying a genuine weakness that affects a narrator's reliability or transmission.

التَّعْدِيلُ — AL-TAʿDĪL

Affirming a narrator's reliability and suitability for transmitting reports.

The scholars used this discipline to distinguish reliable narrators from those whose reports required caution.

🔷 ❖ ١٠ — IS JARḤ THE SAME AS BACKBITING? ❖

الغِيبَةُ — AL-GHĪBAH

Ghaybah means backbiting. Scholarly criticism of narrators, however, has a specific purpose: protecting the transmission of the religion.

It is not permission to speak negatively about people without justification.

Responsible narrator criticism must be:

◇ Relevant to the subject.

◇ Based on evidence.

◇ Conducted according to scholarly principles.

◇ Connected to the reliability of transmission.

The purpose is to protect the Sunnah, not to satisfy personal grudges.

🟣 ❖ ١١ — WHY DISCUSS WEAK NARRATORS? ❖

A student may ask:

“If Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim contains authentic Ḥadīth, why does its Muqaddimah discuss weak narrators?”

The answer is that the Muqaddimah also teaches the principles of Ḥadīth criticism.

Imām Muslim preserved statements from earlier scholars explaining how unreliable transmitters were identified and why their reports required caution.

Such discussions demonstrate the seriousness with which the scholars approached the preservation of Ḥadīth.

🔵 ❖ ١٢ — THE DANGER OF SPEAKING WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE ❖

The Muqaddimah highlights the danger of speaking about religion without knowledge or taking knowledge from an unreliable person.

Among the statements recorded from al-Qāsim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh are:

أَنْ أَقُولَ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ

“That I speak without knowledge.”

أَوْ آخُذَ عَنْ غَيْرِ ثِقَةٍ

“Or that I take [knowledge] from someone who is not trustworthy.”

🌿 TWO LESSONS

١. Do not speak about the religion without knowledge.

٢. Do not take religious knowledge carelessly from unreliable sources.

🔷 ❖ ١٣ — THE MUQADDIMAH IN THE INTERNET AGE ❖

The principles taught by the early scholars remain important today.

A student may encounter a religious quotation on WhatsApp, a website, YouTube, Instagram, or another platform.

Before sharing it, ask:

◇ Where did it come from?

◇ Who originally said it?

◇ What is the original reference?

◇ Is the quotation complete?

◇ Is the attribution authentic?

Checking a quotation online is not the same as performing formal Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl, but both remind us of the importance of careful transmission and verification.

Do not attribute words to the Prophet ﷺ or to a scholar without establishing their source.

🟣 ❖ ١٤ — THE MUQADDIMAH AND AMĀNAH

❖ - أَمَانَةٌ

Amānah means trust and responsibility.

Attributing a statement to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a serious responsibility.

The scholars therefore paid attention to:

◇ إِسْنَادٌ — Isnād: the chain of transmission.

◇ رُوَاةٌ — Ruwāt: the narrators.

◇ ثِقَةٌ — Thiqah: trustworthiness.

◇ ضَبْطٌ — Ḍabṭ: accuracy.

◇ الجَرْحُ وَالتَّعْدِيلُ — Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl: narrator evaluation.

◇ Comparing different transmissions.

The student must learn to transmit knowledge honestly and distinguish what is established from what is uncertain.

🔵 ❖ ١٥ — A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR STUDENTS ❖

🔗 الإِسْنَادُ — AL-ISNĀD

Who transmitted the report?

👤 الرُّوَاةُ — AL-RUWĀT

Who are the narrators?

⚖️ الجَرْحُ وَالتَّعْدِيلُ — AL-JARḤ WA AL-TAʿDĪL

What did the scholars establish about their reliability?

🛡️ الثِّقَةُ — AL-THIQAH

Can the narrator be relied upon?

🎯 الضَّبْطُ — AL-ḌABṬ

Was the narrator accurate in transmitting Ḥadīth?

📖 الحَدِيثُ — AL-ḤADĪTH

What report has actually been transmitted?

🌿 السُّنَّةُ — AL-SUNNAH

What is authentically established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?

💠 This sequence helps students understand the relationship between the chain of transmission, the narrators, their reliability, and the authentication of reports.

🔷 ❖ ١٦ — WHAT MAKES THE MUQADDIMAH SPECIAL? ❖

The Muqaddimah gives students an insight into how the early scholars approached the science of Ḥadīth.

It preserves discussions about:

◇ Who should be trusted.

◇ Which narrators should be avoided.

◇ How transmission errors are identified.

◇ Why the Isnād matters.

◇ Why religious knowledge must be taken carefully.

◇ How narrators and their reports are evaluated.

It is an important introduction to understanding the methods used in Ḥadīth scholarship.

🌿 ═══════ ❖ KEY POINTS ❖ ═══════ 🌿

🟢 The Muqaddimah introduces important principles of Ḥadīth transmission and criticism.

🔵 The Isnād helps establish how a report was transmitted.

🟣 The scholars carefully evaluated narrators and their accuracy.

🔷 Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl was developed to assess narrators and protect the transmission of the Sunnah.

🌿 Religious knowledge should be taken from reliable sources and transmitted honestly.

💠 Reports attributed to the Prophet ﷺ should be verified before they are shared.

🌿 ═══════ ❖ FINAL REFLECTION ❖ ═══════ 🌿

The Muqaddimah of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim reminds us that the Sunnah was preserved through careful scholarship and responsible transmission.

The scholars examined chains, evaluated narrators, compared reports, and identified errors.

The student of Ḥadīth should therefore cultivate two essential qualities:

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ

Seeking knowledge.

التَّثَبُّتُ

Careful verification.

Before saying, “The Prophet ﷺ said,” we should establish where the statement came from and whether it is authentic.

May Allah ﷻ grant us beneficial knowledge, sincerity, accuracy in transmission, and the ability to preserve and pass on the Sunnah correctly. Āmīn.
