╚═════════════════════════════════════╝

① 📖 FIRST: WHAT DOES “NUMBER OF ḤADĪTH” MEAN?

When someone says:

> “Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī contains 7,000+ ḥadīths.”

the student should immediately ask:

**“What counting system is being used?”**

Why?

Because the same collection may be counted differently according to:

🔹 Repeated narrations

🔹 Different chains of transmission

🔹 Different wordings

🔹 Numbering editions

🔹 Whether suspended reports are included

🔹 Whether a narration appearing in several chapters is counted again

Therefore, the numbers below are **study figures**, not a declaration that every edition must contain exactly the same number.

For example, modern datasets list Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī at around ** 7,277 **, while another commonly used numbering gives **7,563**.

 ② 🕌 **THE SIX BOOKS — كُتُبُ السِّتَّة**

The **Kutub al-Sittah — كُتُبُ السِّتَّة ** are the six famous Sunni ḥadīth collections commonly grouped together:

 ① *Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  * صَحِيحُ الْبُخَارِيّ *

Approximately * 7,300 * + narrations** in commonly used counting systems.

One numbering system reaches ** 7,563 **, while other datasets count approximately **7,277**.

** Compiler: ** Imām Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī رحمه الله

📚 * Main feature: * A rigorously selected collection of Prophetic ḥadīth, arranged by books and chapters.

---

 ② *Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim* صَحِيحُ مُسْلِم *

Approximately ** 7,400 + narrations** when repetitions and routes are counted according to certain systems.

Some databases give around ** 7,368–7,459 **, while other traditional numbering systems use a smaller count of distinct reports.

*Compiler : * Imām Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj رحمه الله

📚 * Main feature :* Particularly valuable for its organization of different chains and versions of ḥadīth.

---

 ③* Sunan Abī Dāwūd * سُنَنُ أَبِي دَاوُد *

Approximately *5,274–5,276 ḥadīths*.

**Compiler :** Imām Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn al-Ashʿath رحمه الله

📚 **Main feature:** Strong emphasis on **Aḥādīth al-Aḥkām** — narrations relating to Islamic rulings.

---

 ④ *Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī *جَامِعُ التِّرْمِذِي *

Approximately **4,000 ḥadīths**, depending on the counting system.

Modern datasets give figures around **3,954–4,053 **.

*Compiler :* Imām Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī رحمه الله

📚 **Main feature:** Combines ḥadīth with discussions of their grading, chains and the positions of scholars.

It is especially important for understanding terminology such as:

** Ṣaḥīḥ — حَسَن — حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ — غَرِيب **

---

⑤ *Sunan al-Nasāʾī *سُنَنُ النَّسَائِي *

Approximately ** 5,700+ ḥadīths **.

Modern collections give around ** 5,754–

5,768 **.

**Compiler :** Imām Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī رحمه الله

📚 **Main feature:** A major Sunan collection arranged primarily according to chapters of Islamic law.

---

⑥ * Sunan Ibn Mājah * سُنَنُ ابْنِ مَاجَه *

Approximately **4,300+ ḥadīths**.

Modern datasets give around **4,339–4,345**.

**Compiler:** Imām Muḥammad ibn Yazīd Ibn Mājah رحمه الله

📚 **Main feature:** A major Sunan collection containing many narrations concerning Fiqh and other subjects, including narrations not found in the other five books.

---

③ 📊 *THE SIX BOOKS — QUICK STUDENT MAP*

 **Approximate commonly encountered counts**

 | Collection        | Approx. number |

① | Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  |    7,300 + |

 ② | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim      |    7,400 + |

 ③ | Sunan Abī Dāwūd   |     5,274 + |

 ④ | Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī |     4,000 + |

 ⑤ | Sunan al-Nasāʾī   |    5,700 + |

 ⑥ | Sunan Ibn Mājah   |     4,300 + |

**Important:** These are **not six identical types of books**, and the number alone does not determine the scholarly status of a collection or of every narration within it.

For example, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim are specifically famous as **Ṣaḥīḥ collections**, whereas the four Sunan contain narrations of differing grades and therefore individual ḥadīths require examination.

④ 📚*OTHER FAMOUS ḤADĪTH BOOKS*

The Six Books are **not the only important ḥadīth collections**.

A student should become familiar with several other major works.

---

 ⑤ 🕌 *AL-MUWAṬṬAʾ OF IMĀM MĀLIK*

* الْمُوَطَّأ *

Approximately ** 1,800–2,000  reports **, depending on the edition and counting method.

**Compiler: ** Imām Mālik ibn Anas رحمه الله

📚 One of the earliest surviving major works combining:

**Ḥadīth  + Āthār  + Fiqh + practice of the people of Madīnah.**

It predates the Six Books.

---

⑥ 📖 * MUSNAD AḤMAD* مُسْنَدُ الإِمَامِ أَحْمَد *

This is one of the largest famous collections.

Its total is often given as approximately:

* 27,000+ narrations*

depending on the counting system and edition.

* Compiler: ** Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله

 📌 Important:

**Musnad** means that the collection is primarily arranged according to the **Companion narrator**.

For example:

* Musnad Abī Hurayrah *

* Musnad Ibn ʿUmar *

* Musnad Ibn ʿAbbās *

and so forth.

Therefore, its arrangement differs from the Sunan collections.

---

⑦ 🌿 * SUNAN AL-DĀRIMĪ * * سُنَنُ الدَّارِمِي *

Approximately * 3,400 reports * in some modern datasets.

*Compiler :* Imām ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī رحمه الله

It is an important early ḥadīth collection and is particularly useful for students studying:

📖 Ḥadīth🌿 Sunnah⚖️ Fiqh

📚 Early scholarly transmission

---

 ⑧ 🌱 * AL-ADAB AL-MUFRAD * * الأَدَبُ الْمُفْرَد *

* Compiler: ** Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله

The book focuses particularly on:

❤️ Parents 🤝 Relatives 🌿 Good character

🗣️ Speech 👥 Neighbours 🕌 Social manners

🤲 Mercy and kindness

 📌 Important:

It is **not the same book as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī**.

The fact that Imām al-Bukhārī compiled it does not mean that every narration in *Al-Adab al-Mufrad* has the same authentication status as the narrations of * Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī *.

Individual narrations are studied separately.

---

⑨ 🌹 * RIYĀḌ AL-ṢĀLIḤĪN *رِيَاضُ الصَّالِحِين*

Approximately ** 1,896 ḥadīths ** in commonly used counts.

*Compiler : ** Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله

It is a carefully selected thematic collection dealing with:

🌿 Sincerity 🕌 Worship 🤲 Duʿāʾ ❤️ Character

🤝 Brotherhood ⚖️ Patience 🌙 Fasting

📖 Qur'ān 🌱 Repentance ⚰️ The Hereafter

It is especially useful for students because the chapters are organized around **practical spiritual and ethical subjects**.

---

⑩ 📚 * MISHKĀT AL-MAṢĀBĪḤ *

مِشْكَاةُ الْمَصَابِيح*

Approximately *4,400–5,300 narrations**, depending on the edition and counting method.

** Compiler: ** Al-Khaṭīb al-Tabrīzī رحمه الله

It is a major thematic compilation drawing material from earlier ḥadīth works.

Student note:

*Mishkāt* is **not one of the Six Books**.

It is a later compilation that brings together ḥadīth from numerous earlier sources.

---

 ⑪ ⚖️ *BULŪGH AL-MARĀM* * بُلُوغُ الْمَرَام *

Approximately *1,500–1,800 narrations *, depending on the numbering system.

*Compiler: * Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī رحمه الله

Its principal purpose is the collection of:

** Aḥādīth al-Aḥkām * * أَحَادِيثُ الْأَحْكَام *

Ḥadīths used in discussions of Islamic legal rulings.

It is therefore particularly useful for students studying:

🕌 Ṣalāh 💧 Ṭahārah🌙 Ṣawm 💰 Zakāh

🕋 Ḥajj 💍 Marriage ⚖️ Transactions

📜 Legal rulings

---

⑫ 🌹 *AL-SHAMĀʾIL AL-MUḤAMMADIYYAH*

* الشَّمَائِلُ الْمُحَمَّدِيَّة *

Approximately * 400 narrations**.

* Compiler: ** Imām al-Tirmidhī رحمه الله

It focuses on the:

🌿 Appearance of the Prophet ﷺ ❤️ Character

🕌 Manners 👕 Clothing 🍽️ Food 🛏️ Sleeping

🗣️ Speech 🌙 Worship 🌹 Personal qualities

It is a specialized collection concerning the **Shamāʾil — شمائل ** of the Messenger ﷺ.

---

 ⑬ 📖 *AL-ARBAʿŪN AL-NAWAWIYYAH*

 * الأَرْبَعُونَ النَّوَوِيَّة *

Although popularly called:

“ The Forty Ḥadīths of al-Nawawī ”

the standard collection actually contains **42 ḥadīths**.

Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله selected them around major principles of Islam.

A student should know them because they provide a compact foundation in:

🫀 Intention 🕌 Islam 🌿 Īmān 🌙 Worship⚖️

Lawful and unlawful matters ❤️ Character

🤝 Brotherhood 📖 Religion and guidance

---

 ⑭ 🌙 *ḤADĪTH QUDSĪ COLLECTIONS*

* الأَحَادِيثُ الْقُدْسِيَّة *

There are collections dedicated specifically to ** Ḥadīth Qudsī **.

The term refers to reports in which the Prophet ﷺ relates a statement from Allah, while they are distinct from the Qur'ān in their nature and status.

Various compilations contain different numbers.

One commonly circulated collection contains **40 Ḥadīth Qudsī **.

---

⑮ 🗂️ * THE STUDENT'S MASTER MAP *

**THE MAJOR COLLECTIONS** 🕌 KUTUB AL-SITTAH**

 ① Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī   ≈ 7,300+

② Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim   ≈ 7,400+

⑤ Sunan al-Nasāʾī   ≈ 5,700+

⑥ Sunan Ibn Mājah   ≈ 4,300+

---

 ** OTHER MAJOR COLLECTIONS **

⑦ Al-Muwaṭṭaʾ — Imām Mālik   ≈ 1,800–2,000

⑭ Al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah   ≈ 400+

⑮ Al-Arbaʿūn al-Nawawiyyah  ≈ 42

⑯ Collections of Ḥadīth Qudsī

Often arranged in smaller selections, such as  ≈ 40

These figures vary between editions and databases, so they should be treated as **approximate study counts**.

---

⑯ 🧠 THE MOST IMPORTANT STUDENT LESSON

* NUMBER ≠ AUTHENTICITY *

This is one of the most important principles to remember.

A book containing * 5,000 ḥadīths * is not automatically “stronger” than a book containing * 2,000 *.

Likewise:

** A larger collection does not automatically mean a better collection. **

The student must distinguish between:

**📚 The size of a book**

and

**⚖️ The authenticity of an individual narration.**

For example, the Sunan works contain narrations of different grades, so a particular ḥadīth must be examined rather than assuming its grade from the name of the book alone.

---

 ⑰ 🔍 HOW SHOULD A STUDENT CHECK A ḤADĪTH?

When you encounter a ḥadīth, ask:

① WHO narrated it?    **الرَّاوِي**

② WHERE is it recorded ?   **المَصْدَر**

③ WHAT is the chain?   ** الإِسْنَاد **

④ WHAT is the wording?   ** المَتْن **

⑤ WHAT did the scholars say about its authenticity?  ** حُكْمُ الْحَدِيث **

 ⑥ ARE THERE OTHER ROUTES?  ** الطُّرُق **

⑦ ARE THERE DIFFERENT WORDINGS?

** الرِّوَايَات **

⑧ WHAT DID THE COMMENTATORS EXPLAIN?  **  الشَّرْح  **

This is much more useful than simply asking:

> “ How many ḥadīths are in this book? ”

---

⑱ 🌿 A SIMPLE STUDENT'S ḤADĪTH LIBRARY

A student can remember the collections according to their general character:

📖 ** ṢaḥīḤ **  Bukhārī & Muslim

⚖️ ** SUNAN **Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Nasāʾī & Ibn Mājah

👥 **MUSNAD** Aḥmad

🕌 ** EARLY COLLECTION ** Mālik's Muwaṭṭaʾ

🌿 ** ADAB ** Al-Adab al-Mufrad

❤️ ** CHARACTER & WORSHIP ** Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn

 ⚖️ ** LEGAL ḤADĪTH ** Bulūgh al-Marām

 🌹 ** PROPHETIC CHARACTER ** Al-Shamāʾil

 📚 ** THEMATIC COMPILATION ** Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ

 🌱 ** FOUNDATIONAL ḤADĪTH ** Al-Arbaʿūn al-Nawawiyyah

---

 ⑲ 🧭 THE BIGGER PICTURE

The student should gradually move from:

 ONE ḤADĪTH

⬇️

Its wording

⬇️

ITS ISNĀD

⬇️

Its narrators

⬇️

ITS SOURCE

⬇️

Which collection recorded it?

⬇️

ITS GRADING

⬇️

Ṣaḥīḥ, Ḥasan, Ḍaʿīf, etc.

⬇️

ITS SHARḤ

⬇️

How did the scholars explain it?

⬇️

ITS FIQH & LESSONS

⬇️

ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATION

That is how a student begins to move from **simply collecting ḥadīths** to **actually studying ḥadīth**.

---

 ⑳ 🌿 FINAL REMINDER

Do not become impressed merely by numbers.

A library may contain thousands of narrations, but the student of knowledge learns to ask:

** Where did this ḥadīth come from? **

 ** Who narrated it? **

** How was it transmitted? **

** What did the scholars say about it? **

** What does it actually mean? **

** How should it be understood and applied? **

This is the path from:

 ** ḤADĪTH → ISNĀD → AUTHENTICATION → UNDERSTANDING → PRACTICE  **
