✦ Daʿwah, Organization & the Question of Fixed Periods ✦
_________________________________
A Balanced Look at Khurūj for Daʿwah
The subject of khurūj — going out for the purpose of calling people towards Allah — has been discussed by many scholars.
At the centre of the discussion is an important distinction:
Is going out for daʿwah itself legislated? And are particular periods such as three days, forty days, four months or six months themselves acts of Sunnah — or are they simply organizational arrangements used to facilitate a programme of daʿwah and self-reformation?
These questions should be separated carefully.
The purpose of this article is therefore not to attack people engaged in daʿwah, nor to declare every form of organized daʿwah blameworthy.
Rather, it is to examine the matter through the Qurʾān, Sunnah, and statements attributed directly to recognized Sunni scholars.

① DAʿWAH TO ALLAH IS A NOBLE ACT
“And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah, does righteous deeds, and says: Indeed, I am of the Muslims.”
Sūrah Fuṣṣilat 41:33
Allah سبحانه وتعالى also says:
“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.”
Sūrah al-Naḥl 16:125
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
« بَلِّغُوا عَنِّي وَلَوْ آيَةً »
“Convey from me, even if it is one verse.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3461
Thus, the principle of calling people towards Allah is firmly established.
The question is therefore not whether daʿwah is something good.
It unquestionably is.
The question is how particular methods, arrangements and periods should be understood.

② WHAT DOES KHURŪJ MEAN?
The Arabic word خُرُوج — khurūj simply means going out.
In the context of daʿwah, it refers to travelling or going out to meet people, encourage them towards obedience to Allah, remind them about Ṣalāh, Qurʾān, Dhikr, good character and other aspects of Islam.
The basic concept of travelling or moving from place to place for beneficial daʿwah is not in itself something strange.
The Prophet ﷺ called people to Allah in Makkah, travelled to different communities, sent Companions to teach Islam and sent messengers and teachers to different regions.
The Prophet ﷺ sent Muʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه to Yemen to teach and call the people to Islam.
Therefore, going from one place to another for a legitimate purpose of daʿwah is not automatically an innovation simply because the Prophet ﷺ did not use a modern organizational structure for it.
This is an important distinction.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
③ THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: GOAL AND METHOD
One of the most important principles in this discussion is distinguishing between:
THE GOAL
Calling people towards Allah, encouraging righteousness, teaching beneficial knowledge and helping people improve their religious practice.
THE METHOD
Travelling, arranging groups, assigning responsibilities, choosing meeting places, preparing food, establishing schedules and setting a period for a particular programme.
A method does not automatically become an act of worship simply because it is used to accomplish a good objective.
At the same time, a method should not be presented as a specific Sunnah or prescribed act of worship without evidence.
This distinction becomes particularly important when discussing:
3 days
40 days
4 months
6 months
1 year
or other periods.

④ THE ACTUAL WORDS OF SHAYKH IBN
ʿUTHAYMĪN رحمه الله
One of the most frequently discussed statements on this subject is that of the renowned Sunni scholar:
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn
The statement comes from Liqāʾ al-Bāb al-Maftūḥ, Meeting No. 10, under the discussion:
القول في جماعة التبليغ بين الإفراط والتفريط
“The discussion concerning Jamāʿat al-Tablīgh between excess and negligence.”
The recorded question concerns people who go out for three days with Jamāʿat al-Tablīgh.
The Shaykh responded at length. Among his words:
“As for restricting the daʿwah to three days, four days, two months, four months, six months or two years, there is no basis for this. However, they regard this as a matter of organization;
when a person goes out for three days and knows that he is restricted to those three days, he becomes disciplined and turns away from worldly concerns. So this is an organizational matter; it is not Sharīʿah, nor is it an act of worship.”
This is an especially important passage because the Shaykh himself distinguishes the organizational arrangement from an act of worship.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑤ THE SHAYKH'S ADVICE REGARDING SEEKING KNOWLEDGE
The same answer continues:
فأرى -بارك الله فيك- إن كان اتجاهك لطلب العلم فطلب
العلم أفضل لك؛ لأن طلب العلم فيه خير، والناس الآن
محتاجون لعلماء أهل سنة راسخين في العلم، وإن كان ما
عندك قدرة على تلقي طلب العلم، وخرجت معهم لأجل أن
تصفي نفسك، فهذا لا بأس به، وهناك أناس كثيرون هداهم
الله عز وجل على أيديهم
“So I say to you — may Allah bless you — if your direction is towards seeking knowledge, then seeking knowledge is better for you, because there is good in seeking knowledge, and people today are in need of firmly grounded scholars from Ahl al-Sunnah. If you do not have the ability to pursue knowledge in that way, and you go out with them in order to purify and reform yourself, then there is nothing wrong with that. There are many people whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has guided through them.”
This part is important because it prevents the earlier statement from being presented as though Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله rejected every form of going out with the group.

⑥ ANOTHER RECORDED ANSWER FROM IBN ʿUTHAYMĪN رحمه الله
There is another recorded discussion on the activities of Jamāʿat al-Tablīgh.
The Shaykh was asked about walking around and calling people towards Allah.
He responded:
“As for walking around in order to call people, your Prophet ﷺ used to go around to the people at their dwellings during the season of Ḥajj and call them. That is one example. And he migrated to Madīnah for the purpose of daʿwah, because the people of Makkah had harmed him and prevented him from calling to Allah, so he was commanded to migrate to Madīnah so that the daʿwah could continue. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with this.”
He was then asked about arranging this activity into specific periods.
He replied:
“As for arranging it into three days, forty days, six months or something similar, they say: ‘We do not say that this is a Sunnah; we say that this is an arrangement of a means for consistency in daʿwah.’ And means are not restricted to a single form...”
The Shaykh then gives the example of using a microphone for delivering a sermon, explaining that the microphone itself is not an act of worship; it is a means.
The full recorded answer is available through the Shaykh's official website under:
مدى مشروعية أنشطة جماعة التبليغ
“The extent to which the activities of Jamāʿat al-Tablīgh are legislated.” (Binothaimeen)

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑦ SO ARE THREE DAYS, FORTY DAYS AND FOUR MONTHS “SUNNAH”?
This is where careful wording is necessary.
There is an important difference between saying:
“Three days is a Sunnah prescribed by the Prophet ﷺ.”
and saying:
“Our group uses three days as an organizational period for a particular programme.”
The first statement requires evidence establishing that particular period as a Sunnah.
The second describes an organizational arrangement.
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn's recorded words explicitly state:
نحن لا نقول إن هذه سنة
“We do not say that this is a Sunnah.”
And in the other recorded answer he described the periods as:
ترتيب وسيلة للاستقامة في الدعوة
“An arrangement of a means for consistency in daʿwah.”
(Binothaimeen)
Therefore, the numbers should not automatically be presented as though the Prophet ﷺ specifically prescribed:
3 days + 40 days + 4 months
as a prophetic daʿwah schedule.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑧ SHAYKH IBN BĀZ رحمه الله — A DIFFERENT EMPHASIS
Another major Sunni scholar, Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz رحمه الله, also addressed this issue.
In one recorded answer, he was asked specifically about the periods associated with going out for daʿwah.
He said:
“Daʿwah has no fixed limit, my son. Daʿwah is not restricted to particular days or months; a person calls according to what is easy for him.”
He was then asked about groups agreeing to go out for a month or two.
He explained that there is no problem with agreeing upon a period as an organizational matter, provided the people are qualified and possess knowledge and sound understanding.
In another recorded answer, he explained that a group may arrange to travel for a month, forty days, two months or another period according to their ability and agreement, while emphasizing that the caller must have knowledge and insight.
(BinBaz)
This provides another useful distinction:
The period itself is not being presented as a prescribed prophetic number.
Rather, it can function as a practical arrangement for a particular journey or programme.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑨ KNOWLEDGE MUST REMAIN CENTRAL
Daʿwah is not simply about enthusiasm.
“Say: This is my way; I invite to Allah upon insight — I and those who follow me.”
Sūrah Yūsuf 12:108
The phrase:
means:
“upon insight / with clear knowledge.”
This is an essential principle.
A person should not place himself in the position of teaching people matters that he does not understand.
A person can remind others about what he genuinely knows.
He can encourage Ṣalāh.
He can remind people about repentance.
He can encourage Qurʾān.
He can speak about good character.
But detailed matters of ʿAqīdah, Fiqh, Ḥadīth and Tafsīr require knowledge.
That is why the advice of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله regarding seeking knowledge should not be overlooked.
╔══════════════════════════════╗

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑩ DAʿWAH SHOULD NOT CAUSE NEGLECT OF OBLIGATIONS
Another important principle is that voluntary daʿwah activity should not result in neglecting obligatory responsibilities.
A person has responsibilities towards:
🌙 Allah🕌 Ṣalāh🤲 Parents
💍 Wife and Children🏡 Family💰 Debts💼 Employment
🤝 People Whose Rights Are Under His Care
📜 Personal Obligations
A person should therefore not assume that leaving his family for a particular daʿwah period automatically becomes superior to fulfilling responsibilities that Allah has already placed upon him.
This is why the question should not simply be:
“How many days should I go?”
Rather:
“What does Allah require from me at this particular time, and how can I participate in daʿwah without neglecting what is obligatory upon me?”
╔══════════════════════════════╗
🌿 AHMADTRINI • ذَكِّرْ بِالْخَيْرِ 🌿
╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑪ ORGANIZATION IS NOT THE SAME AS LEGISLATION
This principle deserves special attention.
Islamic activities often require organization.
A masjid may establish:
• prayer timetables,• classes,
• Qurʾānprogrammes,• lectures,
committees,• teaching
schedules,• charitable projects,
• travel arrangements.
None of these things needs to have existed in precisely the same administrative form during the time of the Prophet ﷺ in order to be useful.
The important question is:
Is the arrangement being used as a means?
Or:
Is the arrangement being presented as an act of worship specifically established by revelation?
This distinction is exactly why the recorded words of Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله are so relevant.
He described the arrangement as:
مَسْأَلَةٌ تَنْظِيمِيَّةٌ
“An organizational matter.”
And:
“It is not an act of worship.”

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑫ WHAT SHOULD A PERSON AVOID?
Regardless of which daʿwah method a person follows, several mistakes should be avoided.
① Do not claim that an unproven number is a Sunnah.
If three days are used as an organizational arrangement, describe them as an organizational arrangement.
② Do not make the number itself the objective.
The objective is obedience to Allah and beneficial daʿwah — not merely completing a numerical target.
③ Do not neglect knowledge.
Daʿwah should be based upon knowledge and insight.
④ Do not neglect obligatory responsibilities.
Family rights, debts, employment and other obligations cannot simply be ignored.
⑤ Do not turn a difference of method into hatred.
A person may disagree with another person's method without insulting, slandering or attacking him.
⑥ Do not attribute statements to scholars without verification.
This is especially important when discussing major scholars.

⑬ A WORD ABOUT DISAGREEMENT
The subject of Jamāʿat al-Tablīgh has generated different scholarly assessments.
Some scholars emphasized beneficial aspects of their daʿwah activities while warning against particular issues.
Other scholars raised stronger concerns about aspects of their methodology or about travelling to particular regions.
Therefore, it is not appropriate to take one isolated sentence from a scholar and make it appear as though he issued a blanket ruling covering every person, every country, every local group and every circumstance.
Even in the recorded answer of Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله, he acknowledged beneficial effects and people being guided through the efforts of the group, while simultaneously discussing the importance of knowledge and expressing reservations concerning travelling to certain places.
Similarly, Ibn Bāz رحمه الله emphasized
participating in good while avoiding what conflicts with the Sharīʿah, and he stressed knowledge and sound understanding. (BinBaz)
The responsible approach is therefore to study the actual statements of the scholars rather than reducing the entire discussion to slogans.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑭ THE CENTRAL QUESTION
The central question is not:
“Are three days Islamic?”
Nor:
“Are forty days Islamic?”
Nor:
“Are four months Islamic?”
The better question is:
“What is the Sharīʿah status of the daʿwah itself, and what is the status of the particular organizational method being used?”
Daʿwah to Allah is established by the Qurʾān and Sunnah.
Travelling for beneficial purposes can be permissible.
Organizing one's time can be permissible.
Using a particular period as an organizational tool can therefore be understood differently from declaring that period to be a specific Sunnah.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑮ A SIMPLE SUMMARY
DAʿWAH
Established in the Qurʾān and Sunnah.
TRAVELLING FOR DAʿWAH
Can be a legitimate means of calling people towards Allah.
THREE DAYS
May be used as an organizational period, but should not automatically be described as a specifically prescribed Sunnah.
FORTY DAYS
Likewise, a period of organization or training should not automatically be presented as a prophetic prescription.
FOUR MONTHS
The same principle applies.
OTHER PERIODS
Their permissibility as organizational arrangements depends upon the circumstances and what they involve.
KNOWLEDGE
Daʿwah should be upon insight and knowledge.
OBLIGATIONS
Voluntary daʿwah should not lead to neglect of obligatory responsibilities.
THE PURPOSE
The objective is obedience to Allah, beneficial knowledge, righteous action and calling people towards الخير — not simply completing a number of days.

╚══════════════════════════════╝
⑯ CONCLUSION
There is no doubt that calling people towards Allah is among the greatest acts of goodness.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
« مَنْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ فَاعِلِهِ »
“Whoever guides to a good deed will have a reward similar to that of the person who does it.”
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
At the same time, beneficial intentions should be accompanied by sound knowledge and accurate understanding.
The recorded words of Shaykh MuḥammaKd ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله are particularly useful here. He did not simply reduce the discussion to “all good” or “all bad.”
Rather, his answer distinguished between the daʿwah, the organizational arrangement, and the question of treating specific periods as acts of Sharīʿah or worship.
His words were:
“This is an organizational matter; it is not Sharīʿah, nor is it an act of worship.”
And in the other recorded discussion:
نحن لا نقول إن هذه سنة نقول هذه ترتيب وسيلة للاستقامة في الدعوة
“We do not say that this is a Sunnah; we say that this is an arrangement of a means for consistency in daʿwah.” (Binothaimeen)
These statements should therefore be understood carefully and completely.
The Muslim should seek knowledge, maintain sincerity, fulfil his obligations, call towards Allah with wisdom, and avoid turning organizational arrangements into religious prescriptions without evidence.
And Allah knows best.

A FINAL REMINDER
Share beneficial knowledge.
Encourage what is good.
Speak with justice.
Verify before attributing words to the scholars.
And remember that sincere daʿwah is not merely about how far we travel — but about how sincerely we seek Allah, how correctly we follow His Messenger ﷺ, and how beneficially we guide others.
