* GUARDIANSHIP IN ISLAM : A Sacred Trust for Men *

The Duties of Men: The Guardian of the Family in Islam

Introduction

In Islam, the role of a man in the family is not merely a position of authority; it is a responsibility of care, protection, leadership, and accountability before Allah. A husband and father is entrusted with the well-being of his family and will be questioned about how he fulfilled this trust.

Being a guardian (qawwam) does not mean domination or injustice. Rather, it means carrying the responsibility of providing, protecting, guiding, and treating the family with mercy and fairness.

1. Men Are Responsible for the Care and Protection of Their Families

Allah says:

"Men are protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given some of them more responsibility than others and because they spend from their wealth..."

(Qur'an 4:34)

This verse establishes that men have a duty of qiwamah (guardianship). This responsibility includes providing financial support, ensuring safety, and taking care of the family's needs.

A man's position is not a privilege without accountability; it is a trust from Allah.

2. Providing for the Family Is an Obligation

Allah commands believers:

"Upon the father is the mothers' provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable."

(Qur'an 2:233)

Islam places the responsibility of financial maintenance upon the husband and father. Providing food, clothing, shelter, and basic needs is considered an act of worship when done with the intention of pleasing Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه)

He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"A dinar that you spend in the cause of Allah, a dinar that you spend to free a slave, a dinar that you give in charity to a poor person, and a dinar that you spend on your family — the greatest in reward is the one that you spend on your family."

Reference: Sahih Muslim, Hadith 995

3. Men Must Protect Their Families From Harm and Guide Them Toward Goodness

Allah says:

"O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones..."

(Qur'an 66:6)

This verse teaches that a man must care not only for the physical needs of his family but also for their spiritual well-being. He should encourage prayer, good character, and obedience to Allah.

The family is an amanah (trust), and neglecting religious guidance is a serious responsibility.

4. A Good Husband Treats His Family With Kindness

Leadership in Islam is based on mercy and good character.

Allah says:

"And live with them in kindness."

(Qur'an 4:19)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Narrator: Aisha bint Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنها)

"The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives."

 Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3895

A true leader does not humiliate, oppress, or neglect his family. The Prophet ﷺ showed love, patience, and compassion toward his wives and family members.

5. Men Will Be Questioned About Their Responsibilities

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما)

He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ، وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ، فَالإِمَامُ رَاعٍ وَمَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ، وَالرَّجُلُ رَاعٍ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَهُوَ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ

"Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock. The ruler is a shepherd over the people and is responsible for them. The man is a shepherd over the members of his household and is responsible for them..."

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7138; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1829

This hadith reminds every husband and father that leadership means accountability. A man cannot ignore his family's needs, behavior, or spiritual direction.

6. A Father Must Teach and Raise His Children Properly

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of raising children with care and good manners.

He ﷺ said:

"All of you are shepherds and all of you are responsible for your flock..."

 Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 893

Parents are responsible for teaching children faith, manners, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

7. The Greatest Example Is the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the perfect example of family leadership. He helped his family, showed affection, listened to them, and treated them with mercy.

Aisha bint Abu Bakr reported:

"He used to serve his family..."

 Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6039

This shows that humility and service are signs of true leadership.

Conclusion

The guardian role of men in Islam is a responsibility filled with trust, mercy, and accountability. A successful husband and father provides for his family, protects them, guides them toward righteousness, and treats them with kindness.

On the Day of Judgment, every man will be asked about how he fulfilled this responsibility. True leadership in Islam is not measured by control over others but by how well one fulfills the trust given by Allah.

May Allah guide all families to live with love, mercy, and obedience to Him. Ameen.
