🌱 INTRODUCTION

Students of Islamic knowledge regularly encounter unfamiliar Arabic words when studying Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, Tafsīr and Fiqh.

A good dictionary helps you understand these words, but not every dictionary serves the same purpose. Some explain difficult expressions in Ḥadīth, others focus on Qur’anic vocabulary, while others investigate Arabic roots and classical usage.

🔷 THE STUDENT’S LOOKUP METHOD

How to Find an Arabic Word by Its Root

Many classical Arabic dictionaries arrange words under their root letters rather than listing every word according to its complete spelling.

Consider the root ك ت ب:

كَتَبَ — he wrote

كِتَابٌ — a book

مَكْتَبَةٌ — a library or bookshop

These words are related through the root ك ت ب, although their forms and meanings differ.

🔹◤ 01 ◥ — WRITE THE COMPLETE WORD

Copy the unfamiliar word from your Qur’an, Ḥadīth or Fiqh text.

🔹◤ 02 ◥  — IDENTIFY ITS BASIC FORM

Use your knowledge of Arabic grammar and Ṣarf to recognise the word’s form.

🔹◤ 03 ◥ — DETERMINE THE ROOT LETTERS

Identify the root, usually three letters for many common Arabic words.

🔹◤ 04 ◥  — CHECK THE DICTIONARY’S ARRANGEMENT

Read the introduction if you are unfamiliar with its lookup system.

🔹 ◤ 05 ◥ — FIND THE ENTRY

Look for the particular word and examine the relevant definition.

🔹◤ 06 ◥ — RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL TEXT

Check whether the meaning fits the sentence, narration or āyah.

୧┈┈•༶ IMPORTANT NOTE ୧┈┈•༶

Not all dictionaries follow the same arrangement. Some use root endings or other traditional systems. Learn the method used by your particular edition.

🌿 ═══════ ❖ ═══════ 🌿
