🌿 ═════ 🔷 ARABIC LANGUAGE STUDIES 🔷 ═════ 🌿

A Practical Guide for ʿĀlim Students

Studying Ḥadīth, Qur’an, Fiqh and Classical Arabic

🌿 ═════ ❖ AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS ❖ ═════ 🌿

INTRODUCTION

An Arabic dictionary is more than a book that translates Arabic words into English. It is a tool for discovering meanings, understanding word roots, distinguishing between similar expressions and studying the language of the Qur’an, Sunnah and classical Islamic scholarship.

However, not every dictionary serves the same purpose.

A student studying a difficult word in a Ḥadīth may need a specialist dictionary of unfamiliar narrational vocabulary. A student studying Tafsīr may benefit from a work devoted to Qur’anic expressions. Someone reading a classical Fiqh commentary may need a lexicon that explains the language used by the jurists.

The key is not simply to own many dictionaries. It is to know which dictionary to consult, how to find the correct entry and how to apply the explanation to the text being studied.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔷 01 — AL-NIHĀYAH FĪ GHARĪB AL-ḤADĪTH WA AL-ĀTHĀR

النهاية في غريب الحديث والأثر

Author: Majd al-Dīn Ibn al-Athīr

SPECIALITY:  DIFFICULT WORDS IN ḤADĪTH AND TRANSMITTED REPORTS

This is a specialist reference for unfamiliar expressions found in Prophetic narrations and the reports of the early generations.

Its particular value is that it helps students investigate words whose meanings may not be immediately clear from ordinary Arabic vocabulary.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

Use this dictionary when:

❖ A word in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī or Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim is unfamiliar.

❖ A narration in Sunan Abī Dāwūd or Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī contains an unusual expression.

❖ A Ḥadīth commentary discusses a word whose original linguistic meaning you need to investigate.

❖ You want to understand an expression in an early transmitted report.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the difficult word in the narration.

Step 2 :  Determine the word's root or the form under which it is listed. Do not assume that every dictionary arranges entries in the same way.

Step 3 :  Search for the word using the dictionary's own arrangement.

Step 4 :  Read the explanation, paying attention to the meaning that fits the narration.

Step 5 :  Return to the complete Ḥadīth and read it in context.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

Suppose you encounter an unfamiliar Arabic expression in a narration. A general Arabic dictionary may provide several possible meanings, but you need to know how the expression is used in Ḥadīth.

Consult Al-Nihāyah, examine the explanation and compare it with the wording of the narration and its commentary.

Remember : a dictionary explains vocabulary; it does not independently establish the authenticity of a narration or settle every question of its interpretation.

🟢 02 — AL-MUFRADĀT FĪ GHARĪB AL-QURʾĀN

المفردات في غريب القرآن

Author: Al-Rāghib al-Aṣfahānī

SPECIALITY : QUR’ANIC VOCABULARY AND DISTINCTIONS IN MEANING

This work is devoted to investigating the meanings of words used in the Qur’an. It is particularly helpful when a student wants to understand why a particular Arabic expression is used in a verse and how its meaning relates to the surrounding passage.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ While studying Tafsīr.

❖ When an important Qur’anic word has several possible meanings.

❖ When comparing related Arabic expressions.

❖ When studying how vocabulary contributes to the meaning of a verse.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Write down the exact word as it appears in the verse.

Step 2 :  Identify its basic form or root where necessary.

Step 3 :  Locate the relevant entry using the arrangement of your edition.

Step 4 :  Study the explanation and any distinctions between related meanings.

Step 5 :  Read the verse again and consult a reliable Tafsīr to understand its meaning in context.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

Consider the word  رَحْمَةٌ  (Raḥmah), meaning mercy.

When studying this word in a Qur’anic verse, do not stop at its basic English translation.

Investigate its meaning in the specialist reference, then consider how the verse and its Tafsīr explain the mercy being discussed.

The purpose is to develop a more precise understanding of Qur’anic vocabulary, not to interpret a verse through a dictionary alone.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

💠 03 — LISĀN AL-ʿARAB

لسان العرب

Author: Ibn Manẓūr

SPECIALITY :  EXTENSIVE CLASSICAL ARABIC VOCABULARY

Lisān al-ʿArab is a major classical Arabic lexicon. It brings together a wealth of linguistic material from earlier authorities and is particularly valuable for students reading the works of classical scholars.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When reading classical Ḥadīth commentaries.

❖ When investigating vocabulary found in Tafsīr and Fiqh.

❖ When studying older Arabic prose.

❖ When you need additional linguistic evidence or explanations beyond a brief dictionary definition.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the word and determine its root letters. Knowledge of Ṣarf (Arabic morphology) is extremely helpful.

Step 2 :  Check the introduction to your edition to understand its arrangement.

Step 3 :  Locate the root entry. Traditional lexicons may organise words differently from modern Arabic dictionaries.

Step 4 :  Search within the entry for the particular word or derived form.

Step 5 :  Read the relevant definitions and examples rather than assuming that the first meaning is always the correct one.

Step 6  : Compare the possible meanings with the passage you are studying.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

Suppose a classical scholar uses an Arabic word that has several related meanings. Lisān al-ʿArab can help you investigate those meanings and the linguistic evidence associated with them.

This is particularly useful when a short English translation does not adequately explain the word.

༶•┈┈୨ STUDENT REMINDER ୧┈┈•༶

Do not attempt to read a lengthy entry from beginning to end every time. First identify the question you want answered, then search for the relevant information.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔶 04 — MAQĀYĪS AL-LUGHAH

مقاييس اللغة

Author: Ibn Fāris

SPECIALITY :  ROOT MEANINGS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WORDS

Maqāyīs al-Lughah is particularly valuable for investigating the fundamental meanings associated with Arabic roots.

Ibn Fāris often explains a root through one or more underlying meanings and relates words derived from it to those meanings.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When studying Arabic word roots.

❖ When comparing words derived from the same root.

❖ When investigating how related expressions may share a linguistic connection.

❖ When pursuing more advanced studies in classical Arabic.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the root letters of the word.

Step 2 :  Locate the root entry using the dictionary's arrangement.

Step 3 :  Read the underlying meanings proposed by Ibn Fāris.

Step 4 :  Examine the relationship between those meanings and the word you are studying.

Step 5 :  Check the word in context and consult another lexicon if necessary.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

Consider the Arabic root ك ت ب, associated with writing.

Related forms include:

كَتَبَ — he wrote.

كِتَابٌ — a book.

كَاتِبٌ — a writer.

مَكْتُوبٌ — something written.

Maqāyīs al-Lughah can help a student investigate the linguistic relationships associated with a root.

However, do not assume that the root meaning automatically determines the precise meaning of every derived word. The actual usage and context must also be considered.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔷 05 — MUKHTĀR AL-ṢIḤĀḤ

مختار الصحاح

Author: Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Rāzī

SPECIALITY :  A CONCISE CLASSICAL ARABIC REFERENCE

Mukhtār al-Ṣiḥāḥ is useful for students who need a more concise reference rather than immediately consulting a large and detailed lexicon.

It can serve as a convenient starting point when checking vocabulary encountered during lessons or independent reading.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When an ordinary word in a classical passage is unfamiliar.

❖ When you want to check a basic linguistic meaning.

❖ When revising Arabic vocabulary.

❖ When you need a preliminary definition before consulting a more extensive reference.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the word.

Step 2 :  Determine its root where necessary.

Step 3 :  Check the arrangement used by your edition and locate the entry.

Step 4 :  Read the relevant definition.

Step 5 :  Return to the original sentence and see whether the meaning fits.

༶•┈┈୨ STUDENT REMINDER ୧┈┈•༶

A concise dictionary is an excellent starting point, but it may not provide all the evidence needed for a difficult technical expression. When the meaning remains unclear, consult a more specialised or extensive reference.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🟢 06 — AL-MUʿJAM AL-WASĪṬ

المعجم الوسيط

Compiled by the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo.

SPECIALITY :  GENERAL ARABIC VOCABULARY AND USAGE

Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ is a general Arabic dictionary that is useful for students who want to check word meanings and develop their overall command of Arabic.

It is a practical reference for everyday vocabulary, reading exercises and many words encountered in modern Arabic.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When learning new Arabic vocabulary.

❖ When reading general Arabic prose.

❖ When checking the meanings of familiar and unfamiliar expressions.

❖ When you need a general definition before investigating a specialised meaning.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the word you want to understand.

Step 2 :  Check how your edition arranges entries and whether you should search by the word or its root.

Step 3 :  Read the definition and any additional meanings.

Step 4 :  Identify which meaning fits the sentence.

Step 5 :  If the word appears in a technical discussion of Ḥadīth or Fiqh, consult an appropriate specialist reference as well.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

If you encounter a word in an Arabic reading lesson, Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ may provide the general meaning you need.

If that same word appears in a legal discussion with a specialised meaning, the general definition may not be sufficient.

This is why students must distinguish between ordinary linguistic usage and technical terminology.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

💠 07 — HANS WEHR: DICTIONARY OF MODERN WRITTEN ARABIC

قاموس هانس فير للغة العربية المعاصرة

Edited by J. Milton Cowan.

SPECIALITY :  ARABIC–ENGLISH VOCABULARY AND WORD FORMATION

Hans Wehr is a widely used Arabic–English dictionary, particularly helpful for students who need English explanations while learning to recognise Arabic roots and derived forms.

It is especially useful for modern written Arabic, although it also contains vocabulary relevant to broader Arabic reading.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When you need an Arabic–English definition.

❖ When studying Arabic vocabulary independently.

❖ When learning how verbs and nouns relate to their roots.

❖ When reading modern Arabic articles, books and other written material.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the Arabic word.

Step 2 :  Determine its root if the word is a derived form.

Step 3 :  Find the root in the dictionary's alphabetical arrangement.

Step 4 :  Locate the particular word or form beneath the relevant entry.

Step 5 :  Read the English definition and any grammatical information provided.

Step 6 :  Check the word in its original sentence.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

The root ك ت ب  gives rise to several related forms:

كَتَبَ — he wrote.

كِتَابٌ — a book.

كَاتِبٌ — a writer.

مَكْتَبٌ — an office or desk, depending on context.

Recognising the root helps you find related forms more efficiently.

༶•┈┈୨ STUDENT REMINDER ୧┈┈•༶

Hans Wehr is an excellent companion for Arabic–English study, but it should not replace specialist classical references when investigating difficult expressions in early Ḥadīth or scholarly works.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔶 08 — AL-MIṢBĀḤ AL-MUNĪR

المصباح المنير

Author: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Fayyūmī.

SPECIALITY :  CLASSICAL VOCABULARY RELEVANT TO FIQH

Al-Miṣbāḥ al-Munīr is a classical Arabic lexicon particularly useful for investigating vocabulary encountered in Islamic legal literature, including words found in discussions associated with major Fiqh works.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When studying classical Fiqh texts.

❖ When a word in a legal discussion is unfamiliar.

❖ When investigating the linguistic basis of a legal expression.

❖ When you need to distinguish an ordinary meaning from a technical legal usage.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the word in the Fiqh passage.

Step 2 :  Determine its root or base form where necessary.

Step 3 :  Locate the entry according to your edition.

Step 4 :  Read the linguistic explanation.

Step 5 :  Return to the Fiqh text and examine how the jurist uses the word.

Step 6 :  Consult the relevant Fiqh commentary to understand the technical ruling or definition.

╰〔 STUDENT EXAMPLE 〕╯

A word may have a general meaning in Arabic but a more specific meaning in a chapter of purification, prayer, transactions or another area of Fiqh.

Use Al-Miṣbāḥ al-Munīr to investigate the language, then consult the jurist's discussion to understand its legal application.

A linguistic definition alone does not establish a legal ruling.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🟣 09 — AL-QĀMŪS AL-MUḤĪṬ

القاموس المحيط

Author: Al-Fīrūzābādī.

SPECIALITY :  CLASSICAL VOCABULARY IN A TRADITIONAL LEXICON

Al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ is a famous classical Arabic dictionary containing a large body of vocabulary. It is useful for students who want to investigate word meanings through an established classical lexicographical tradition.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When reading classical Arabic literature.

❖ When checking words in older scholarly works.

❖ When comparing definitions across classical dictionaries.

❖ When pursuing more advanced vocabulary research.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Identify the word and its root.

Step 2 :  Learn the particular arrangement used in your edition. Traditional dictionaries may organise entries according to root letters in a way that differs from modern alphabetical dictionaries.

Step 3 :  Locate the appropriate entry.

Step 4 :  Read the definition carefully, noting any relevant alternative meanings.

Step 5 : Compare the result with the passage and, when necessary, another lexicon.

༶•┈┈୨ STUDENT REMINDER ୧┈┈•༶

Do not become discouraged if you cannot locate a word immediately. The difficulty may lie in the dictionary's arrangement rather than in the word itself.

Learn how the reference is organised before attempting advanced research.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔷 10 — TĀJ AL-ʿARŪS

تاج العروس من جواهر القاموس

Author: Murtaḍā al-Zabīdī.

SPECIALITY :  EXTENSIVE CLASSICAL LEXICOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH

Tāj al-ʿArūs is an extensive classical lexicon that draws on earlier dictionary traditions, including Al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ. It is particularly valuable for advanced students and researchers who need detailed linguistic information.

༺ When should you use it? ༻

❖ When a shorter dictionary does not adequately explain a word.

❖ When comparing classical linguistic explanations.

❖ When investigating subtle differences between meanings.

❖ When undertaking detailed research into classical Arabic vocabulary.

꧁ HOW TO USE IT ꧂

Step 1 :  Formulate a precise question about the word.

Step 2 :  Identify the root and locate the entry using the dictionary's arrangement.

Step 3 :  Search the entry for the relevant expression.

Step 4 :  Read the explanations that relate directly to your question.

Step 5 :  Compare the evidence with other lexicons and the original passage.

Step 6 :  Record the meaning that is supported by the context, rather than copying every definition.

༶•┈┈୨ STUDENT REMINDER ୧┈┈•༶

Tāj al-ʿArūs is a large reference work. You do not need to master every detail of an entry to benefit from it. Learn to locate the information relevant to your research.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔶 HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DICTIONARY

Use the subject you are studying to guide your choice.

ḤADĪTH AND TRANSMITTED REPORTS

Begin with Al-Nihāyah fī Gharīb al-Ḥadīth wa al-Āthār when investigating difficult narrational vocabulary.

QUR’AN AND TAFSĪR

Consult Al-Mufradāt fī Gharīb al-Qurʾān for specialist investigation of Qur’anic words, alongside a reliable Tafsīr.

GENERAL ARABIC VOCABULARY

Use Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ for general Arabic meanings and Hans Wehr for Arabic–English support.

CLASSICAL ARABIC LITERATURE

Consult Lisān al-ʿArab and Al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ for extensive classical vocabulary.

ROOTS AND WORD FORMATION

Use Maqāyīs al-Lughah to investigate fundamental root meanings. Use Hans Wehr and other suitable lexicons to identify and compare derived forms.

FIQH AND LEGAL TERMINOLOGY

Consult Al-Miṣbāḥ al-Munīr for linguistic investigation, then examine the relevant Fiqh commentary for technical definitions and legal application.

ADVANCED LEXICOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH

Use Tāj al-ʿArūs when you need a more extensive investigation of classical vocabulary and earlier lexicographical explanations.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

💠 THE STUDENT'S PRACTICAL METHOD

Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar Arabic word, follow this method.

▓▒░ 01 ░▒▓ — IDENTIFY

Write down the exact word as it appears in the passage. Keep the complete sentence or verse available.

▓▒░ 02 ░▒▓ — ANALYSE

Identify the root, verb form or derived noun when possible. Knowledge of Naḥw and Ṣarf will make this process easier.

▓▒░ 03 ░▒▓ — SELECT

Choose a dictionary suited to the subject. Do not automatically use a general dictionary for every technical question.

▓▒░ 04 ░▒▓ — LOCATE

Learn the arrangement of your chosen reference. Check its introduction or instructions when you are unsure how to find an entry.

▓▒░ 05 ░▒▓ — INVESTIGATE

Read the relevant definition and compare possible meanings. Avoid selecting a meaning simply because it is the first one listed.

▓▒░ 06 ░▒▓  — APPLY

Return to the original text. Determine which meaning fits the grammar, context and subject being discussed.

▓▒░ 07 ░▒▓  — VERIFY

When the passage is difficult, compare another suitable reference and consult a reliable commentary or qualified teacher.

▓▒░ 08 ░▒▓  — RECORD

Keep a vocabulary notebook with four items:

Arabic word — root or form — relevant meaning — source and context.

This method turns dictionary use into a systematic study skill rather than a process of searching for isolated translations.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🟢 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

❖ Choosing the first English translation without checking the context.

❖ Assuming every dictionary arranges words in the same way.

❖ Searching for a derived word without considering its root or base form.

❖ Treating a general linguistic meaning as a complete explanation of a technical term in Ḥadīth or Fiqh.

❖ Assuming that every word derived from the same root carries exactly the same meaning.

❖ Copying a long dictionary entry without identifying which part answers the question.

❖ Using a dictionary as a substitute for Tafsīr, Ḥadīth commentary, Fiqh scholarship or the guidance of qualified teachers.

🌿 ─────────────────── 🌿

🔷 KEY POINTS

A good student does not merely ask, “What does this word mean?”

The student also asks:

❖ Which dictionary is most suitable for this subject?

❖ How is the entry arranged?

❖ What are the possible meanings of this word?

❖ Which meaning fits the original passage?

❖ Do I need a specialist reference or commentary to understand it correctly?

Learning how to use dictionaries properly strengthens a student's ability to read classical Arabic, investigate vocabulary and approach Islamic texts with greater care.

اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنَا بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنَا، وَعَلِّمْنَا مَا يَنْفَعُنَا، وَزِدْنَا عِلْمًا

O Allah, benefit us through what You have taught us, teach us what will benefit us, and increase us in knowledge.
