✦ FROM “IQRA”: CULTIVATING A CULTURE OF READING ✦

 READING, REFLECTION & KNOWLEDGE: A BELIEVER’S JOURNEY

Reading is one of the most beneficial habits a person can develop. A good book can educate the mind, strengthen the vocabulary, improve communication and introduce us to knowledge and experiences that we may never encounter personally.

For a Muslim, reading can be even more valuable when we choose beneficial books—especially the Qur'an, Authentic Hadith and Reliable works of Islamic scholarship.

1. Reading keeps the mind occupied

Reading beneficial material gives the mind something constructive to focus on. It can help reduce boredom, idle thinking and wasted time.

Instead of spending hours scrolling through distractions, a person can spend that same time learning something that benefits them in this life and the next.

2. Reading improves speech and communication

The more we read, the more words and expressions we encounter. Reading exposes us to different sentence structures and helps us communicate our thoughts more clearly.

A person who reads regularly often becomes more confident in both speaking and writing.

3. Reading increases knowledge

Reading introduces us to history, science, religion, culture, literature and countless other fields.

The Qur'an itself teaches us to ask Allah for increased knowledge:

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

“And say, ‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.’”

— Qur'an 20:114

Knowledge is a blessing, but it becomes even more valuable when it is understood and put into practice.

4. Reading allows us to benefit from the experience of others

Books preserve the knowledge, experiences and lessons of people who came before us.

Instead of making every mistake ourselves, we can learn from the mistakes and successes of others.

The writings of scholars, teachers and people of wisdom can save us years of unnecessary trial and error.

5. Reading develops the mind

Reading encourages us to think, compare, question, understand and reflect.

It strengthens our ability to process information and understand ideas beyond the immediate words on a page.

6. Read books that strengthen your faith

Not everything that is published is beneficial. A Muslim should be selective.

Make the Qur'an part of your reading.

Read Authentic Hadith.

Read Reliable works by trustworthy scholars.

Read books that increase your knowledge of Allah and encourage you toward righteousness.

The best reading is not merely reading that fills the mind—it is reading that improves the heart and character.

7. Reading helps us use our time wisely

Time is one of the greatest blessings Allah has given us.

Instead of allowing hours to disappear through meaningless entertainment, we can use some of that time to read, learn and develop ourselves.

8. Reading expands vocabulary

Regular reading exposes us to new words and different ways of expressing ideas.

This improves both written and spoken communication and helps us understand difficult material more easily.

9. Reading develops understanding

Reading teaches us to identify important information, recognize ideas and understand the meaning behind written words. With practice, we become better at interpreting and connecting ideas.

10. Reading broadens our horizons

Books introduce us to different cultures, societies, historical periods and ways of thinking.

They can help us understand people who live differently from us and develop a broader perspective on the world.

11. Reading keeps us informed

Reading reliable news, history and educational material can help us understand important events taking place around us and throughout the world.

However, we should always distinguish reliable information from misinformation.

12. Reading builds confidence

The more knowledge a person gains, the more confidently they can participate in conversations, studies and professional life.

Knowledge gives a person something meaningful to contribute.

13. Reading strengthens previously learned skills

Regular reading keeps vocabulary, comprehension and language skills active.

Like any skill, reading becomes stronger with consistent practice.

14. Reading develops imagination

Stories, history and literature allow us to imagine places, people and situations beyond our immediate experience.

Reading can therefore develop creativity and prediction skills.

15. Reading supports education

Students who develop strong reading habits often find it easier to understand textbooks, assignments and examination material.

Reading is not only for school or university—it is a lifelong skill.

16. Reading can bring peace and relaxation

A quiet period with a beneficial book can provide a healthy break from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

Instead of constantly consuming short pieces of information, reading an extended text teaches the mind to slow down and concentrate.

17. Reading encourages more reading

Once reading becomes a habit, curiosity often grows.

One book leads to another.

One question leads to another.

One area of knowledge opens the door to many others.

18. Reading can refresh the mind

A change of subject or a quiet reading session can help the mind step away from everyday distractions.

It gives us an opportunity to reflect and recharge.

19. Reading should lead to action

Knowledge has the greatest value when it changes our behaviour.

Do not read simply to say, “I know.”

Read so that you can say:

“I understand, I benefited, and I am trying to act upon what I learned.”

20. Make reading a lifelong habit

You do not have to read ten books a month.

Start with a few pages every day.

Read consistently.

Read beneficial material.

Read with understanding.

And most importantly, apply what you learn.

4. Pray Salat Al-duha (after sunrise) and also the remaining 4 obligatory salaah of the day.

5. If someone says something mean to you, just shrug it off and dismiss it in a friendly, laidback manner, and pray that Allah shall forgive him or her. They will probably get the message that they're not triggering your anger and they will stop.
