Virtues of the Month of Muharram💫

Muharram is one of the four sacred months.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar and it is a great and blessed month. The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days which means it changes over time and the placement of each month will differ from previous years when compared with the Gregorian calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which Allah mentions in surah At-Tawbah.

Allah the Most High says:

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein”

[At-Tawbah 9:36].

It was narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet ﷺ said: “… The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha‘baan.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari.

The words of Allah “فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنْفُسَكُمْ " (so wrong not yourselves there in) [Surah at-Tawbah 9:36]

means: Do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months, because doing so is a greater sin than at other times.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, concerning this verse that the command not to wrong yourself applies in all months, then Allah singled out four months and made them sacred, and emphasized their sanctity, and He made sin during these months more grave, and He made righteous deeds and the reward thereof greater.

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

May Allah the Most High grant us all Tawfeeq (success) and bless us and our families in this new year of 1446H. Allah is the Source of strength and comfort. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet ﷺ, his family and companions.
