Sunnah Foods & Their Combinations | Prophetic Eating Habits & Etiquettes 2/2

🍽️ **SUNNAH FOODS & THEIR COMBINATIONS**

🌿 **Eating Habits • Food Combinations • Etiquettes • Prophetic Guidance**

 🌿 ** INTRODUCTION **

Food is an everyday part of our lives, yet the Sunnah teaches us that even eating and drinking can carry beautiful lessons.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not merely teach people what was lawful to eat. His Sunnah also contains guidance concerning **how food was eaten, how it was appreciated, how it was shared, how excess was avoided, and how blessings were not wasted.**

Some foods were eaten together, some were eaten separately, and some combinations are specifically recorded in authentic narrations.

At the same time, it is important to distinguish between:

① A food the Prophet ﷺ ate.

② A food the Prophet ﷺ praised.

③ A combination the Prophet ﷺ is

authentically reported to have eaten.

④ A combination that people later

recommended for health reasons.

Not every popular “Sunnah food combination” found online is actually established as a Prophetic practice.

So, in this article, we will look at these foods and combinations carefully, while keeping the beautiful lessons of the Sunnah at the centre.

🌴 **① DATES — التَّمْر**

Dates were among the familiar foods of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions

🌴 ** HOW DID THE PROPHET ﷺ EAT DATES? **

It is sometimes said that the Prophet ﷺ regularly ate ** three, five or seven dates ** in the morning.

This needs clarification.

There is an authentic hadith specifically concerning ** seven ʿAjwah dates **

Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Whoever eats seven ʿAjwah dates every morning will not be harmed by poison or magic on that day.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5445 **

This narration should not be changed into a general rule that the Prophet ﷺ always ate every kind of date in odd numbers.

🌴 ** BREAKING THE FAST WITH DATES **

“The Prophet ﷺ would break his fast before praying with fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates; and if there were no dry dates, he would take a few sips of water.”**

 ** Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 696 **

 🥒 **DATES & CUCUMBER**

One particularly interesting combination is authentically recorded:

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ

« رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ الرُّطَبَ بِالْقِثَّاءِ »

“I saw the Prophet ﷺ eating fresh dates with cucumber.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5440 **

So rather than saying that dates were specifically combined with butter, the authentically recorded combination is **fresh dates with cucumber**.

╭═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╮

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“A simple combination can become memorable when it is preserved through the Sunnah.”*

╰═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

🍯 **② HONEY — العَسَل**

Honey has a special place in Islamic revelation.

Allah ﷻ says:

“From their bellies comes a drink of different

colours in which there is healing for people.”

 ** Qur’an 16:69 **

 🍯 **HOW WAS HONEY USED?**

Honey was used as a treatment during the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه narrated that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ concerning his brother's illness, and the Prophet ﷺ said:

« اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا »

“Give him honey to drink.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5684 **

The narration describes the man repeatedly returning to the Prophet ﷺ until his brother recovered.

🍯 **HONEY & THE QUR’AN**

A statement frequently circulated is:

**“Use the two remedies: honey and the Qur’an.”**

This wording is found in **Sunan Ibn Mājah 3452 **, but that particular report is graded **weak (ḍaʿīf)** on the cited grading. Therefore, it should not be presented as an authentic hadith without qualification.

The Qur’anic verse about honey and the authentic hadith concerning its use are sufficient to establish its special place.

 ⚠️ **A NOTE ABOUT HONEY & WATER**

There is no need to claim that the Prophet ﷺ had a fixed Sunnah of drinking honey mixed with water or taking honey on an empty stomach.

Such practices may be used as ordinary food or personal dietary choices, but they should not automatically be labelled **“the Sunnah.”**

╭═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╮

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“The Sunnah gives us enough authentic guidance without needing to add what was never established.”*

╰══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

 🥛 **③ MILK — اللَّبَن**

Milk was consumed by the Prophet ﷺ and is specifically mentioned in the Qur’an.

Allah ﷻ says:

“And surely in livestock there is a lesson for you. We give you drink from what is within their bellies—from between digested food and blood—pure milk, pleasant to drink.”

 ** Qur’an 16:66 **

🥛 **THE PROPHET ﷺ DRINKING MILK**

**“The Prophet ﷺ drank milk, rinsed his mouth and said, ‘It contains fat.’”**

** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 211 **

There is also a narration in Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 3455 containing the words:

« اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ »

“O Allah, bless it for us and increase us in it.”

The report is transmitted by al-Tirmidhī, who discussed it as ḥasan

🥛 **MILK & BREAD**

Milk and bread may certainly be eaten together as a normal meal, but a specific Prophetic practice of **dipping bread into milk** should not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ without an authentic proof.

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“Authenticity protects the beauty of the Sunnah.”*

╰════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

🌾 **④ BARLEY — الشَّعِير**

Barley was part of the simple diet of the household of the Prophet ﷺ.

“The family of Muhammad ﷺ never ate their fill of barley bread for two consecutive days until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2970 **

 🥣 ** TALBĪNAH — التَّلْبِينَة

Talbīnah was a barley-based dish and is specifically mentioned in authentic narrations.

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها would recommend it for the sick and for someone grieving the death of a loved one.

The Prophet ﷺ said concerning it:

 إِنَّ التَّلْبِينَةَ تُجِمُّ فُؤَادَ الْمَرِيضِ، وَتَذْهَبُ بِبَعْضِ الْحُزْنِ

“Indeed, the talbīnah gives rest to the heart of the sick person and removes some of the sorrow.”

** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5689 **

Another narration describes ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها preparing talbīnah for grieving family members.

 🌾 ** TALBĪNAH & HONEY **

Talbīnah and honey may certainly be combined as food, but the specific combination **“Talbīnah + honey as a Prophetic prescription”** should not be presented without evidence.

The authentic reports establish the virtue and use of ** talbīnah itself **.

╰════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

 🫒 ** ⑤ OLIVE OIL —  زَيْتُ الزَّيْتُونِ **

Olives and olive oil are mentioned in the Qur’an, and a narration concerning olive oil is reported in Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī.

“Eat the oil and use it, for it comes from a blessed tree.”

 ** Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1851 **

 🫒 **OLIVE OIL WITH BREAD**

Bread and olive oil are perfectly permissible together, but there is not a sound basis for declaring **“dipping bread in olive oil”** as a specific Prophetic Sunnah unless a particular authentic narration is supplied.

🫙 **OLIVE OIL & VINEGAR**

Likewise, olive oil and vinegar make a perfectly ordinary dressing, but calling this a specific **“Sunnah salad dressing”** goes beyond the evidence.

The Sunnah authentically establishes that **vinegar was praised as a condiment**, while the olive is clearly mentioned in the Qur’an.

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

╰═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

# 🌱 **⑥ BLACK SEED — الحَبَّةُ السَّوْدَاء**

Black seed is among the foods specifically mentioned in authentic Prophetic medicine.

Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

« فِي الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا السَّامَ »

“In the black seed there is healing for every disease except death.”

**Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5688; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2215 **

🌱 **HOW SHOULD WE UNDERSTAND THIS?**

It is common to see claims that the Prophet ﷺ specifically instructed people to:

 grind black seed with honey;

 mix it with warm water;

 take it in a particular quantity;

or use it as a fixed daily preparation.

These particular combinations and recipes should not automatically be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ without authentic evidence.

The authentic hadith establishes the special Prophetic statement concerning **black seed itself **.

Medical use should also be approached responsibly, particularly when someone has an illness or is taking medication.

╰═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

🫙 ** ⑦ VINEGAR — الخَلّ **

Vinegar was appreciated by the Prophet ﷺ.

“What an excellent condiment vinegar is.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2052 **

The Prophet ﷺ therefore demonstrated appreciation for a simple condiment.

There is also a report mentioning a meal consisting of **bread, dates and vinegar**, but the strongest and clearest point is the authentic praise of vinegar itself.

🫙 **A SIMPLE LESSON**

Not every blessed meal has to be expensive.

A simple meal can be satisfying when it is accompanied by gratitude.

🎃 **⑧ PUMPKIN — الدُّبَّاء**

The Prophet ﷺ liked pumpkin or gourd.

“I saw him seeking out the pieces of gourd from around the dish, and from that day I have continued to love gourd.”

** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5379 **

This is one of the beautiful narrations that allows us to glimpse the Prophet’s ﷺ personal preferences.

Anas رضي الله عنه did not merely record the event; he developed a love for pumpkin because he had seen the Prophet ﷺ enjoying it.

🎃 **PUMPKIN STEW**

Pumpkin can naturally be prepared in many ways, including in soups and stews.

However, the authentic narration establishes that the Prophet ﷺ **ate and liked gourd**; it does not establish every modern pumpkin recipe as a Sunnah recipe.

💧 **⑨ WATER — الْمَاء**

Water is one of Allah’s greatest blessings.

The Sunnah gives us guidance concerning the manner of drinking.

 💧 **THREE BREATHS**

Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

 لَا تَشْرَبُوا وَاحِدًا كَشُرْبِ الْبَعِيرِ، وَلَكِنِ اشْرَبُوا مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ،

 وَسَمُّوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ شَرِبْتُمْ، وَاحْمَدُوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ رَفَعْتُمْ

Do not drink in one gulp like a camel. Rather, drink in two or three, mention the Name of Allah when you drink, and praise Him when you finish.”

 ** Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī; Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn 757 **

💧 **DRINKING WHILE SITTING**

There are authentic narrations discouraging drinking while standing.

However, it would be inaccurate to say that the Prophet ﷺ **never** drank while standing.

Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated that he gave the Prophet ﷺ Zamzam water and that the Prophet ﷺ drank it while standing.

ʿAlī رضي الله عنه also drank while standing and said that he had seen the Prophet ﷺ do the same.

Therefore, the matter should be presented accurately: **drinking while sitting is from the established etiquette, while drinking while standing also occurred from the Prophet ﷺ.

💧 **COOL WATER**

There is no need to claim that the Prophet ﷺ specifically preferred cool water over very cold water unless an authentic proof is provided.

*“Even a sip of water can become an act of gratitude when the heart remembers Allah.”*

🍽️ **PROPHET’S ﷺ EATING ETIQUETTES**

The Sunnah of eating is not limited to particular foods.

It includes manners that bring dignity, gratitude and blessing to the meal.

BEGIN WITH ALLAH'S NAME**

The Prophet ﷺ taught:

« إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى »

“When one of you eats, let him mention the Name of Allah.”

If he forgets at the beginning, he should say:

« بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ »

“In the Name of Allah at its beginning and its end.”

 ** Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3767; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1858 **

---

② **🤲 EAT WITH THE RIGHT HAND**

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand.”**

** Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2020a **

---

③ **🍽️ EAT FROM WHAT IS IN FRONT OF YOU**

The Prophet ﷺ taught ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah

“O young boy, mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.”

 ** Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3777 **

When sharing a communal dish, another narration also instructs people to eat from its sides and leave the centre.

---

④ **🤲 LICK THE FINGERS & CLEAN THE DISH**

Jābir رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

« إِنَّكُمْ لَا تَدْرُونَ فِي أَيِّهِ الْبَرَكَةُ »

“You do not know in which portion of it the blessing lies.”

This was connected with licking the fingers and cleaning the dish after eating.

** Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2033a **

This teaches us not to treat food carelessly or wastefully.

---

 ⑤ **🍽️ AVOID EXCESS**

The Prophet ﷺ said:

« مَا مَلَأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ »

“The son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach.”

He ﷺ then gave the well-known guidance:

« فَثُلُثٌ لِطَعَامِهِ، وَثُلُثٌ لِشَرَابِهِ، وَثُلُثٌ لِنَفَسِهِ »

“A third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath.”

 ** Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 2380 **

This is not a requirement to measure every meal mathematically.

It is a powerful Prophetic principle encouraging **moderation and avoiding overeating**.

╭════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╮

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“The Sunnah teaches us not only what to place on the table, but when to know that we have had enough.”*

╰════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

🍽️ **SUNNAH FOOD COMBINATIONS**

It is important to separate **authentic Prophetic combinations** from combinations that have simply become popular in modern Islamic food lists.

 🌴 **① FRESH DATES + CUCUMBER 🥒**

This is directly established.

« رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ الرُّطَبَ بِالْقِثَّاءِ »

“I saw the Prophet ﷺ eating fresh dates with cucumber.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5440 **

🍞 **② BREAD + DATES + VINEGAR 🫙**

A report mentions bread, dates and vinegar being available in the household of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها, followed by the Prophet ﷺ praising vinegar as a condiment. This supports the existence of such simple foods together, though it should not be turned into a fixed “Prophetic recipe.”

 🥣 **③ TALBĪNAH**

Talbīnah is authentically mentioned for the sick and grieving.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

« إِنَّ التَّلْبِينَةَ تُجِمُّ فُؤَادَ الْمَرِيضِ، وَتَذْهَبُ بِبَعْضِ الْحُزْنِ »

Indeed, talbīnah gives rest to the heart of the sick person and removes some of the sorrow.”

 ** Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5689 **

🍯 **④ HONEY**

Honey itself is authentically established as a food and treatment.

However, combinations such as **honey + warm water** should not automatically be labelled a Prophetic combination unless an authentic narration establishes that specific practice.

🥛 **⑤ MILK**

Milk was consumed by the Prophet ﷺ, and there is a narration in Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī concerning the supplication after drinking it.

 🌱 **⑥ BLACK SEED**

Black seed is authentically mentioned as having healing properties, but specific recipes such as **black seed + honey** or **black seed + warm water** should not be presented as Prophetic combinations without proof.

╭════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╮

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“Authentic Sunnah is beautiful enough; it needs neither exaggeration nor invention.”*

╰════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

# 🌿 **FINAL ADVICE**

The Sunnah does not ask us to turn eating into a complicated system.

Rather, it teaches us to eat with **gratitude, moderation, good manners and awareness of Allah ﷻ

 🌴 EAT WHAT IS LAWFUL

Choose food that is halal.

🍃 CHOOSE WHAT IS WHOLESOME

Do not deliberately make unhealthy excess a lifestyle.

 🤲 REMEMBER ALLAH

Begin with **بِسْمِ اللَّهِ**.

 🖐️USE THE RIGHT HAND

This is from the Prophetic etiquette.

🍽️ AVOID WASTE

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to appreciate the blessing in food.

🥣 EAT WITH MODERATION

Do not fill the stomach excessively.

🤝 **SHARE FOOD

Feeding others is among the beautiful forms of generosity encouraged in Islam.

 ❤️ **BE GRATEFUL

Food is not merely something we consume.

It is a provision from Allah ﷻ.

╭════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╮

🌿 **AHMADTRINI • MADRASA IBN ABBAS** 🌿

*“The blessing is not only in the food; it is in gratitude for the One who provided it.”*

╰════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╯

🌙 ** FINAL REFLECTION **

The Prophet ﷺ lived simply.

He ate what was available.

He appreciated good food.

He did not reject wholesome blessings.

He avoided excess.

He taught good manners.

He discouraged waste.

And he connected ordinary actions with remembrance of Allah ﷻ.

So when we sit down to eat, we can remember that the Sunnah is not merely about asking:

**“What food did the Prophet ﷺ eat?”**

It is also about asking:

**“How did he ﷺ eat?”**

“How did he ﷺ behave?”

“How did he ﷺ treat the blessing?”

“How can I eat in a way that pleases Allah ﷻ?”

That is where the beauty of the Sunnah truly appears.

“O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us, grant us lawful and wholesome provision, and make us among the grateful.”
