A DETAIL ACCOUNT OF MEATS IN ISLAM

MECHANICAL SLAUGHTERING OF
CHICKENS
Mechanical slaughter is of three types:
  1. Chickens are transported to the place of slaughter through a conveyer belt and are manually slaughtered. If there is certainty that the chicken is alive and the Muslim slaughterer recites the name of Allah upon slaughtering, then the chicken is Halaal. In this case, only the transportation is mechanical but the slaughtering is manual. This procedure is unanimously permissible and recommended.
  1. Chickens are transported by means of the conveyer belt to the mechanical slaughter blade. Once the mechanical plant comes into operation, the blade also comes into operation and cuts the chicken. This procedure is not permissible. It does not matter if the plant and the blades are controlled together or separately.
  1. The chickens are transported by means of the conveyer belt to many slaughter blades and every blade is controlled separately by a Muslim who recites the name of Allah upon effecting the mechanical slaughter. This procedure conforms to the principles of Sharée Zabh set out by the Fuqahaa. According to our knowledge, such a procedure does not yet exist.

STUNNING CHICKEN

It has now been established through scientific research as well that the practice of making animals unconscious before slaughtering, as carried out in western countries, is more painful for the animal. Therefore, it is necessary for MUSLIMS IMAM to make every effort to obtain exemption from this practice.
Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Darul Ifta Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi

It is Haram to stun an animal by striking it or giving it an electric shock etc.because that causes suffering to the animal and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade causing suffering and tormenting them, and he enjoined kindness and goodness in general terms, and with regard to slaughter in particular.
IMAM MUSLIM narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
Do not take anything in which there is a soul as a target.”
And IMAM MUSLIM narrated that Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)forbade tormenting any kind of animal to death.
IMAM MUSLIM also narrated from Shaddad ibn ‘Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
Allah has decreed kindness (or proficiency) in all things. So when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters.”

SAYING “BISMILLAH” OVER MEAT
Q: Some people in the Arab countries say that as per some hadith whose meaning is something like this, “That people asked as to whether we should eat from food offered from people of other religions, as we do not know if it is Halal or not” upon which the answer from the Holy Prophet (saw) was to “say Bismillah and eat.”
I do not know the exact words nor I know this hadith. Please advice. Wassalam. Hasan – Jeddah.
A: The Hadith in the question is incorrectly quoted.
The Hadith in reference is quoted in Bukhari. The Sahaba, Radi-Allahu anhum, enquired from Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) about the meat slaughtered by the A’araab(Muslims living in the outskirts).Since they had recently accepted Islam and the Sahaba, Radi-Allahu anhum, did not witness the slaughtering and the Tasmiyah (reciting of Bismillah)during the slaughter, that created a doubt in them.
Upon that, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “You say Bismillah and eat the meat.” In other words, you do what you are supposed to do, that is, recite Bismillah before eating and do not have a baseless doubt as the animal is slaughtered by Muslims who must have recited Tasmiyah before slaughtering. The order to recite Bismillah and eat was not as a substitute for the Bismillah at the time of slaughtering. (Fathul Bari; Ibn Hajar)
It is not permissible to purchase meat from non-Muslim outlets and simply recite Bismillah and eat it.

IS KOSHER MEAT HALAL ?

By Syed Rasheeduddin Ahmed
There are several issues with Kosher:
  1. In Judaism, the rules and methods of slaughtering are not open and published. Unlike in Islam, where any adult sane Muslim can slaughter an animal by following the rules prescribed by Shariah, in Judaism only one kind of Rabbi, known as the Sachet, may slaughter Kosher animals. The Sachet is specially trained for this purpose and no other Jew can slaughter an animal.
Although Jews say that they slaughter in the name of God, we do not know what else they say in Hebrew while slaughtering. Their prayers and methods of slaughtering are in the hands of a few people and are not generally known.
  1. The Sachet does not say prayers on all animals he slaughters at a time. Instead, he only says prayers on the first and last animals he slaughters. For example, if a Sachet has to slaughter ten cows, he will only say the prayer on the first and tenth cow while slaughtering, saying nothing on the cows in between.
This method of slaughtering is not similar to the method prescribed by Shariah nor is it similar to the practice of Ahle-kitab at the time of our beloved Prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallum. Meat slaughtered by Ahlekitab was considered halal because of similarity in the slaughtering method and in the Niyah at that time.
These are the reasons why most Ulama do not consider Kosher meat halal.
If a Muslim is not in danger of death, he must avoid eating haram food at any cost. If halal meat is not available, one can eat fish or vegetables or can even go to the slaughter house to slaughter an animal himself. There is no excuse to eat non-zabiha meat or kosher meat in USA.
Zabihaproducts can easily be found in a big city like New York City.In addition, there are many Muslim-owned restaurants that serve zabiha meat and there is no excuse to eat Kosher.
